installed my gel cell yet and I might change my mind on it if I can get a
look at this other one first

-----------------------------------------------------G'day fellow Rebellers ; I just purchased a "dry" Odessy battery here
in sunny OZ on the recommendation of a friend who fitted a similar one in
his Glasair / 0-360 Lyc' and is very happy with it.... I bought an "ES
650"....it has a metal case and is HALF the weight and LESS than half the
size of a conventional "Gil" battery. On the coil spring vs bungie
gear....BOB !...The only calculation I have done as yet is to measure the
free length VS the compressed length of the spring....I estimated that the
spring has about 4 12 inches of undercarriage movement.... from
memory......(I did all this about 2 years ago !) The "coil strut" just
replaces the same position and working of a normal bungie strut. I figure
if it doesn't pan out well, I'll just make up a bungie strut as
normal...(actually, I've been looking at using rubber "donuts"...literally
like donuts of rubber....a pile of them on a 1 inch strut should work
quite well...and not have the rebound problem of a normal spring !) Rich
Bartman has not gotten back to me as yet with the info I have requested
regarding the spring information. All I have had to go on was that Rich
said HIS springs ("Heavy Duty") sagged after an undisclosed period,...so
he suggested I use the "Extra Heavy Duty" springs...which I did.
McCallister (or something similar)...Die Springs... does that name ring a
bell with any other builders ? I noticed that when I installed these
springs that they obviously needed some pre-load so that they did not
start to "work" until the plane was pretty fully loaded...so I made some
spacers from nylon to pre-load the gear struts..... I'm quite happy with
the result (though I obviously have not flown the plane as yet) The only
reservations I hold are for the fact that I have not as yet figured out a
backup wire stop or brace incase I break an "inner" in my telescoping
strut assemblies.....anyone got any suggestions ? On a different note :
Does anyone know Kent Vandervelde's (I assume) NEW e-mail address ?...I
keep writing and asking about his "Global Hobo" Trip around the world and
down here to Tasmania....maybe he has already departed......anyone know
whats happening with him or his trip ? I appreciate getting ANY advice
from you guys......there's not much useful information floating down here
that I can draw on for reference ! Thanks & 541 R
