Batteries,Bungies & assorted Bits !

G'day gents What is the normal use of an odessy battery? I haven't
installed my gel cell yet and I might change my mind on it if I can get a
look at this other one first

It was originally Black Panther Batteries and was used in automobile
racing,
mainly drag racing. Was bought out by Oddessy. You can find more info
in a

Rick Harper

Batteries,Bungies & assorted Bits !

Post by Rick Harper » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:39 pm

G'day Guys !

The Odyssey Battery ..(I just checked the spelling on the box) is used (in
various
sizes) in everything from Jet Skis, Motorbikes, Planes, Helicopters , Cars
(all
kinds) , Boats , Trucks etc etc.

They are generally much smaller than conventional batteries....but may have
a few
quirks....such as "they may supply as many amps" (for cranking
purposes)...but
I don't believe that they will supply them AS LONG as a conventional
battery.
EG: a conventional battery might give you 30 seconds of cranking in one
l.....o......n.....g..... hit...but the Odyssey might only give a 5 second
burst then need
a rest. (this is how it has been explained to me ).

But as I said, they seem to work quite well for those who have them ...and
they are a
whole bunch smaller and lighter than a conventional.....
the only real test as yet will be to watch their longevity !

Bob Patterson

Batteries,Bungies & assorted Bits !

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:39 pm

G'day Rick !

Please keep us posted on your success with the Odyssy battery -
there are a few being used here, and it sounds like a great solution.

I'm HOPING that Wayne will have a drawing of HIS spring gear
leg, and that he will bring it down for our next Builders Meeting !!
(Hint, hint !! :-) ) It should be a lively topic, as Rick Ford
will be bringing drawings of HIS spring gear setup. We can compare
notes, and hopefully, everyone will benefit !

It's possible they MIGHT be available in computer format,
and we can get a set emailed to you ... and maybe posted to the
FTP archives here at dcsol.com, too !!

For a safety cable, you could always fall back to the "Alaska"
method - just run a cable down the OUTSIDE of the tubes, lightly taped
in place, picking up the main gear bolt, rather than the bolt on the
spring tube.

Interesting that you mention the 'rubber donuts' - the Murphy
floats use a series of Urethane pucks between washers, for shock
absorbing, and they work quite well (a bit stiff ...). There are
several homebuilts that have used this method successfully, as well.
The beauty is that you can order "prescription formulated" Urethane
that has just the bounce and energy absorbing qualities that you
want !! A Peitenpol at Brampton had 3 different formulations of
pucks before the builder was happy with it - the gear worked MUCH
better than the converted Corvair engine he used, unfortunately ! :-(
(He hopes to have it rebuilt and flying with a Lycoming O-235
by next year ....)

Several builders here like what you did with the Thorp nose
bowl on your cowling - I can't remember ... is there a photo in
the files at the dcsol.com FTP site ??? If not, could you please send
a couple to Mike to post ?? Thanks !

Bob

I have rubber donuts in compression on my Rebel landing gear and have been
very pleased with it. I will go into some detail on it in part 4 of the 4
part write up on the airframe clean up that you and some other rebel
builders have asked for.

I am still doing some work on the cowl flaps to get the cht & oil temp to run
a little higher in long decents from high alt. I would like to get this
finished before I submit the first article.

The first part should be posted to the site in the very near future. The

Sorry Bob, that's where I draw the "line"! I have been asked for years and I
WILL NOT supply drawings/calculations/ etc. for my gear struts as, I'm sure
you can understand, I do not want my reputation (what little there is)
tarnished by someone that builds from drawings and can't TIG weld properly,
skimps on materials or uses them for an aircraft that has different
strut/leg angles or empty and gross weights. If the struts break because I
build them then I'll take the rap, otherwise I'm not interested in sharing
here, SORRY! Since I haven't heard from anyone that I've sold a set to, I
know they are all (approx 50 sets) still working because people usually only
complain and not compliment!! (actually in all fairness, Yourself, Carmen
Titus, Ron Hamsen and Claude Potvin HAVE all told me how well they have
worked for them!) FWIW, I WILL admit that I have had one single strut that
sheared out the tube, at the lower bolt hole. They were on a homebuilt
Christavia that was dropped in on one ski from about 6 feet up, in a full
stall. My gear strut only gave up <AFTER> it finished ripping the entire
steel, welded, wishbone out of the aircraft!!!!!! If anyone I have sold a
set to wants to make sure the strut will outlast this style of destruction,
drill and rosset weld the .120" x 1 1/4" spacer at the bottom of the strut
to the .059" x 1" tube, so you have a .179 wall to shear out instead of a
.059! One of my customers cleaned the entire gear off of his Rebel, that
left both wheels on the passenger side of his aircraft. The only pieces of
the entire landing gear that we were able to reused were my struts. The MAM
stuff was all scrap, including the tires!

I will also not be at the next builders meeting, as I will be somewhere WARM
for 2 weeks starting the Friday before the meeting!!!!!! I apologize for any
mail I don't answer in my absence, so please don't send any specifically to
my attention from the 12th until the 27th!!

Hope you don't mind, but I WILL share the "Alaskan" safety cables I
installed on Charles Dixon's Rebel. A pictures attached for Mike to post on
the ftp site. Note that they attach to the outer axle bolt (and not the
strut bolt) at the bottom and at the top they attach to the opposite side of
the wishbone so if you rip out a strut, the cable will hopefully hold you up
since it's not connected to the departing bolts! The cable is only made 1/4"
longer than the maximum travel of the strut, so if something gives up it
doesn't get enough momentum going (hopefully) to snap the cable also! That's
a 1/4" cable! 3/16ths is probably enough, but Charles is putting Tundra
tires on, like Joe Junkers recently shown on MAM's site, and he will be
bouncing around the gravel bars of Alaska! Better safe, than sorry!!

Best Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:39 pm

Thanks so much, Steve !!!! We REALLY appreciate the effort -
I suspect your article will become a VERY important reference work
for EVERY Rebel builder !!!

There's a good possibility that Mary Jones at EAA would like
to publish it in the Experimenter magazine, since they are devoted
to homebuilding in a big way !! (A little more so than Sport
Aviation, which is turning into the "warbirds & jets" magazine :-( )
Also, our Canadian RAA magazine might be interested ....
No money, of course, but lots of gratitude !! ;-)
And I suspect Rich would LOVE to use it for the Rebel Rouser Newsletter
- he needs all the help with content that we can give him !

Thanks again for taking the time to help all the other Rebel
builders improve their birds !

Hi Wayne !

Glad you re-sent it - the original din't get posted !

Don't blame you for not wanting to give away your income-
producing secrets ! Especially not as it could bring you more grief
than anybody needs ....

Sorry you can't make it to the meeting next Sunday - please
think a few kind thoughts about us, stuck up her, up to our armpits
in snow, while you're laying on the beach, soaking up the sunshine !!
(In fact, please bring BACK some of that sunshine !! ;-) :-) )

Maybe you could email the picture directly to Mike to post.

Enjoy your holiday !! (I suspect it will be a busy season
at Irish Field this year !!!)

the ftp site. Note that they attach to the outer axle bolt (and not the
strut bolt) at the bottom and at the top they attach to the opposite side
of
the wishbone so if you rip out a strut, the cable will hopefully hold you
up
since it's not connected to the departing bolts! The cable is only made
1/4"
longer than the maximum travel of the strut, so if something gives up it
doesn't get enough momentum going (hopefully) to snap the cable also!
That's
a 1/4" cable! 3/16ths is probably enough, but Charles is putting Tundra
tires on, like Joe Junkers recently shown on MAM's site, and he will be
bouncing around the gravel bars of Alaska! Better safe, than sorry!!

Best Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

For a safety cable, you could always fall back to the "Alaska"
method - just run a cable down the OUTSIDE of the tubes, lightly taped
in place, picking up the main gear bolt, rather than the bolt on the
spring tube.

It's a snail mail newsletter that has been around since the
early days .... been through about 3 publishers. Currently put out
by Rich Bartman, who IS on this list ....

Rich Bartman <rbartman@usa.net>

I believe the subscription is $20 USD, and it is down to being
a quarterly publication. This list has replaced it for many, but those
builders who don't have email access are very glad Rich keeps putting
it out !! It does have the advantage of printing letters and photos
from other countries, and tips that don't always make it here. Also,
it sometimes has longer travel stories that might be a bit much for
email.

It was originally Black Panther Batteries and was used in automobile racing,
mainly drag racing. Was bought out by Oddessy. You can find more info in a
street&drag car parts catalog like JEGS or SUMMIT in the states.

Hi Drew !

I think they're popular here for use in SeaDoo-type watercraft,
because they can't spill acid & pollute lakes, in crashes.

Batteries,Bungies & assorted Bits !

G'day fellow Rebellers ;

I just purchased a "dry" Odessy battery here in sunny OZ on the recommendation of a friend who fitted
a similar one in his Glasair / 0-360 Lyc' and is very happy with it....
I bought an "ES 650"....it has a metal case and is HALF the weight and LESS than half the
size of a conventional "Gil" battery.

On the coil spring vs bungie gear....BOB !...The only calculation I have done as yet is to measure
the free length VS the compressed length of the spring....I estimated that the spring has about 4
inches of movement in it......which translates to about 12 inches of undercarriage movement....
from memory......(I did all this about 2 years ago !)

The "coil strut" just replaces the same position and working of a normal bungie strut.
I figure if it doesn't pan out well, I'll just make up a bungie strut as normal...(actually, I've been

information. All I have had to go on was that Rich said HIS springs ("Heavy Duty") sagged after
