Hi Jesse !
We've used ONLY Automatic Transmission Fluid (Deltron/Dextron ??)
in the Rebels, since about 1992, at least..... No problems !
We use it in the regular brakes, and also in the amphib floats for
brakes and retraction/extension.
Robin started using it because spills were a lot less aggressive
attacking the paint, it was kinder to the rubber seals & clear plastic
hoses, and there was no chance of getting the wrong kind when travelling ....
Suspect it might be less expensive too ... ;-)

Back to the brake cylinders, this is interesting

these are the cylinders that came with my kit, and it specifically says not
to use DOT 3 or 4 as that will damage the buna-N seals....I thought I
remember DOT 3 being recommended here on the list, but I could easily be
mistaken. Incidentally, they advertise replacement seals Evan, if these
are the ones you have.

Yes there is a bit more to it but IMO it makes no sense to use anything
but a mineral oil based product like 5606, dexron tranny fluid, or
hydraulic fluid in a light airplane. That makes common buna-N o-rings
the first choice. Cost, availability, low temperature characteristics,
environmental resistance, toxicity, etc. The common MS orings are buna.
I would use nothing else but buna for my rebel brakes and hydraulics. I
would consider viton to be acceptable but more likely to leak at below
freezing temperatures.
