I believe all these things use standard industrial O-rings. Nothing special.

Bought my moose kit 2006. Can't reach factory by phone or email.
Replaced slave brake system with cylinders for each pedal and a remote
reservoir. Need to replace all seals in each cylinder. no info stamped
on cylinders
ie: part or model #. I heard they may have been making their own back
then and maybe getting parts from matco in USA?
Any ideas on info about seal kits- suppliers-model #'s of cylinders etc.

The type of fluid that you will be using is the critical question that needs
to be addressed

Vegetable based, such as used in most automotive applications.
Mineral based, such as most general aviation planes use (5606 red in color)
Synthetic, as used in the big systems (Skydraul, higher combustion
temperature) on the bigger airplanes.

Not all seals will hold up to all of the many types of fluids.

Yes there is a bit more to it but IMO it makes no sense to use anything
but a mineral oil based product like 5606, dexron tranny fluid, or
hydraulic fluid in a light airplane. That makes common buna-N o-rings
the first choice. Cost, availability, low temperature characteristics,
environmental resistance, toxicity, etc. The common MS orings are buna.
I would use nothing else but buna for my rebel brakes and hydraulics. I
would consider viton to be acceptable but more likely to leak at below
freezing temperatures.

Back to the brake cylinders, this is interesting
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/mc-4.php
these are the cylinders that came with my kit, and it specifically says not to use DOT 3 or 4 as that will damage the buna-N seals....I thought I remember DOT 3 being recommended here on the list, but I could easily be mistaken.
Incidentally, they advertise replacement seals Evan, if these are the ones you have.

Hi Ken,
Since you have done the research, what about buna-N in the fuel system? Thinking about auto gas in the future, and I got a gascolator from Vans. I asked the tech guy if it was ok for auto gas and he said yes, and that the gasket was buna-N. I did a quick google search, but didn't find anything to confirm what he said. I guess alcohol would be bad for it, and probably the o-rings in the quick-drains too. I know my selector valve is ok..it's the Andair one. I should have spent the $$ and got the Andair gascolator as well.
Thanks.

[rebel-builders] Fw: moose brake cylinders

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi Jesse !

We've used ONLY Automatic Transmission Fluid (Deltron/Dextron ??)
in the Rebels, since about 1992, at least..... No problems !
We use it in the regular brakes, and also in the amphib floats for
brakes and retraction/extension.

Robin started using it because spills were a lot less aggressive
attacking the paint, it was kinder to the rubber seals & clear plastic
hoses, and there was no chance of getting the wrong kind when travelling ....

Suspect it might be less expensive too ... ;-)

DOT3 is alcohol based. It will indeed destroy buna.
Don't know about DOT4 which I think is silicone??

OK, thanks guys. Sounds like my memory was off. I guess it was the ATF that I remember being recommended, and it sounds like that is the obvious choice.

It is Jesse - Dextron III ATF... not a leak or rotted seal/o-ring in 15
years using it for brakes and all amphib components.
