I think you get better cooling too on the metal
cowls because your inlets
are bigger. If you recall, that is what finally
fixed mine, and I didn't
have to change them much either. But that resulted
in 50 degrees cooler.

But in any case, where do you get this fiberglass
plenum? Will it fit the
speed cowl?

I did find the part number for the carb heat box.
Van's calls it an airbox,
which is why I missed it initially.

I will also be installing a new radio. Any
recommendations? I want one that
has a high power transmit, and will not give me any
grief with noise, either
antenna RF or from the electrics. I am pretty happy
with the rest of my
instruments. With my new LS EI, I will also have a
display that shows the
engine map and timing advance, which should be
interesting. It even has the
option of a knob to adjust your timing advance, but
I don't think I will
push my luck with that one.

Another question for the XP360. Is the carb offset
to the pilot side, and is
there a special speed cowl option from Murphy for
this? My engine is an A4M.

Hi John ! (and Walter ...) ;-)

Ralph Baker has aready been through this whole
exercise
with his Elite - emails are in the archives. You
can search
by SENDER ...and... KEYWORD in the BODY ...

He used the Vans airbox & baffles (it's a big
round filter !)
and a Vans 'snorkel' fitting glassed onto the bottom
front of the
'speed cowl' - a very nice looking installation. He
wanted
foolproof alternate air, which the Vans setup gives
-
by a spring-loaded door .... plus the large paper
filter.

Ralph must be travelling, or he'd have chimed in
-
maybe we can get him to post a few pics to the FILES
section ...

BTW Walter - Pierre used the molded fiberglass
plenum for his
XP - it ducts ALL of the air in and down through the
cylinders.
Absolutely NO cooling problems ! Only disadvantage
is -
you have to take it off to get at the spark plugs
...
Of course, he did have a great 4 door metal cowling
with
a large exit chute at the bottom.... (and the Thorp
T-18
nosebowl - $80 from Aircraft Spruce ...)

The vans bulkheads are prepunched for the prop bolts but you need to put
the dome attach scerws in this is easy beause you can see right through the
fiberglass spinner to drill the holes

Sean,

The VAN's website shows a few air boxes for O-360's. Which one did you
use? ... and was there any issues in rigging up carb heat?

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:00 pm

I checked into this and ended up talking to Tom Glaze at ACS. They needed
500 orders to get that 1058 price, but unfortunately they have only about
100 right now, and likely won't make it to 200 by tomorrow.

While this radio has some nice features, I noticed that it only has 5 watt
transmit output. I thought most had 7 and some have 10.

Some of the places I fly in the mountains here, I am often out of range with
transmit. I can hear a long ways, but can't talk to them.

interesting.

Thanks Sean, Clear to me waht the problem is.
I have noted my carb heat control is making
metal
,ready to fail no doubt. How do I get more air
in
there
without a major mod?

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by kitplane_solutions » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

No that is a the original two piece Elite cowl that had a lot of rework done
around the air box. I have since figured out how to put the airbox in without
an extra 50 hours of glass work but it sure looked cool

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

Roger. Checked the archives for a picture of a VANS air box install ... no
joy. Any chance you could upload a few? Sean, your experience and lessons
learned with this is most appreciated.

Cheers, Bob 612e

No that is a the original two piece Elite cowl that had a lot of rework done
around the air box. I have since figured out how to put the airbox in
without
an extra 50 hours of glass work but it sure looked cool

Sounds very good.

Now I also need a new speed cowl and a dynafocal mount. Anyone
have one of
these they don't need?

It does come with all the bits to assemble the door but you will
need a 2"
flange to attach the scat hose to your heat muff. Vans also
includes a
alternate air door kit to bypass the filter as the normal setup
filters both
warm and cold air. The original bypass door was held close by a
magnet and
was to open itself if the filter plugged but was found to open
when ever it
felt like it. They now have a cable operated door in its place.
You do not have
to install this door if you are not flying in heavy snow or
freezing rain as it is
olny there in case you pack the air filter full of ice and snow
important if you
fly a lot of IFR. If you are ever in dought just pull the carb
heat on as it is
also filtered you can even use it on the ground.

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by kitplane_solutions » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

It does come with all the bits to assemble the door but you will need a 2"
flange to attach the scat hose to your heat muff. Vans also includes a
alternate air door kit to bypass the filter as the normal setup filters both
warm and cold air. The original bypass door was held close by a magnet and
was to open itself if the filter plugged but was found to open when ever it
felt like it. They now have a cable operated door in its place. You do not have
to install this door if you are not flying in heavy snow or freezing rain as it is
olny there in case you pack the air filter full of ice and snow important if you
fly a lot of IFR. If you are ever in dought just pull the carb heat on as it is
also filtered you can even use it on the ground.

[rebel-builders] EliteProp&airfilter

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

Sounds very good.

Now I also need a new speed cowl and a dynafocal mount. Anyone have one of these they don't need?

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:01 pm

Thanks for uploading the pics Sean ... their worth 1000 words and more.
Looks like the air box inlet is bigger then would be for a VANS installation
... no mods to the lower cowl .. true?

Bob 612e
