[rebel-builders] SR IO-540 baffles

Post by jtpackard » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Tim:
I can't help you with the baffles, but I do have the same engine (not
mounted) from George Coy. Would be very interested in what you end up with,
it could help those of us with the same or similar engine. Also, are you
using the Murphy cowling, or are you making your own? I heard the Murphy
cowling won't fit the G1D5 without modifications.

I finally got the engine mounted and am ready to start on the baffles. I
have paper templates for the baffles that came with the engine but it turns
out the pattern is for an O-540. The cut outs for the cylinder heads are
different; I suppose this is the difference between parrallel valve and
angle valve engines. Mine is an angle valve (IO-540-G1D5). Where can I find
templates for this engine? Better yet, does anyone have notes and pictures
for a similar install? I could modify the O-540 templates to fit but I'm
worried that there might be other dimensional differences that will make
this more work than it seems.

[rebel-builders] SR IO-540 baffles

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Hi Tim !

Might be worth checking with Van's - they use 540's in the RV-10.
The Van's baffles for the 320 & 360 are beautifully cut & shaped -
all you have to do is trim the tops to fit whatever cowl you're
using, and you're done !! :-)

[rebel-builders] SR IO-540 baffles

Post by Tim Saxton » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

Tom and Bob,

I have the new cowl from Murphy that is designed for the larger angle valve
engines. This is the cowl used by Gerry Halsall, see the Moose completions
page on the Murphy web site. I saw Gerry's plane last summer and the cowl
fit very nice. The cowl also has a large bottom exit area which I plan on
using for the exhaust and oil cooler arrangement.

The RV-10 baffles won't work, at least that's my understanding. The RV-10
uses only parallel valve (I)O-540 engines. Angle valve engines are too heavy
and too wide for the RV-10 cowl.

Tim
