can someone tell me why they add the reinforcemnt on top of the wing
instead
of in the bottom on the the Moose and 3500 SR To me it would make more
sense if it were the other way.

Moose -SR wing

Post by David Stroud » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:05 am

Probably to resist buckling, Gilles. The top of the wing is in compression and the bottom
in tension in most positive G maneuvers. On my wing stress analysis, it was shown that my
bottom skins could be .013" and the top could be about .021" I think it was. We defaulted
to .020" for the bottom and .025 in the top.

The top of the wing is in compressive load. The reinforcements are to
maintain the leading edge cell.

Wayne G. O'Shea

Moose -SR wing

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:05 am

Thanks Gilles, but what I was asking is why you thought the lower skin
needed reinforcing over the top skin. I was hoping you had some reasoning
for your thoughts! The lower skin is in tension and the top is in
compression (during normal flight loads). The Moose .063 doubler on the top
leading edge area helps to stop the skin from buckling between the rivet
pitch and the large rivets keep it in place to do so. It is also very
important at holding the integrity of the leading edge structure since all
loads off the "floating" main spar need to be transferred to the front
fuselage pickup (unlike a Cessna wing)

Guess I'm just getting a bit concerned after you asked questions about
stringer thickness and skin thickness for the SR/Moose when the best I can
tell you are building an Elite. Maybe it's none of my business to watch out
for you, if you are planning to adlib some design changes, but that's just
the way I am! I have lost too many aviation friends already and don't need
to add to the list. If you are planning any changes to structures I would
suggest that you get a direct okay from Darryl Murphy or at least an
Aeronautical Engineer. Otherwise if you do indeed make structural changes
please at registration of your airplane call it a Gilles Special" and remove
Murphy from the picture. What you MAY have planned could fit into the
"bigger Band-Aid" scenario and when you reinforce one area and make it too
rigid another area (that's likely critical!) is going to crack/buckle or
snap.

I'll leave you alone,
Wayne

Wayne, you deserve personal answer

when I was car racing (for 20 years) I always had little modifications
that
made the car safe and easy to drive, for that reason I was quite often
leading the pack. At the time fomula 5000 were as fast as formula 1 at
Silverstone and I felt pretty good turning laps 1/10 of a second faster
than
Ronnie (Peterson)
The only thing that I have ever buckled is my safety belt....the upper
part
of the wing has not reached that point yet...!!!!! ;-)
