Aileron spade clearance and wingtip

Hi all,

Can someone tell me what the down aileron deflection
is? I am trying to figure out if the top surface od
the spade sits flush with the underside of the top
surface of the fiberglass wingtip. The reason is my
wingtip on the top is bowing up a bit above where the
spade is and I wanted to add a piece of angle to hold
it flush.

I set the wingtips after the flaps and ailerons were installed. The flaps
are even or flush with the top of the fuselage. Then lock the ailerons to
the flaps. Another check is the leading edge skin on the bottom of the flaps
and ailerons is flush with the bottom of the wing. Then install the wing
tips and the trailing edge of the wing tip should be even with the aileron.
I had to cut and reglass the wing tip to get it to fit.

The spade should fit under the wing tip and not push it up.

Received this from Brian a couple of weeks ago. Also read the emails below.
The right wing tip is being a real pain. We will install it the best we can
but most likely it will need to be replaced when a better one is available.

Hi Don,
1/ Ailerons.....15 degrees up, 12 degrees down.
Flap....max of 25 degrees, with 12 degrees of droop on the aileron.
Elevator....I settle for 20 up. 15 down.
Rudder, as much as you can get allowing 1/4" clearance from the Elevator as
it cycles up and down.
OK, now to set neutral aileron, ignore the nonsense in the manual about
building a plywood jig thing......the aileron and flap are in the neutral
position when the lower surface of the leading edge of the flap/aileron (the
flat bit forward of the spar) is level with the bottom surface of the wing.
You will notice the aileron/ flap in this position have the trailing edges
slightly raised...this is the built in 5 degrees.

Hope your day is going well.

I wanted to give you a heads up and maybe get some info.

In wrapping up our work on our wings we are installing the wing tips. We
have installed the left wing tip and all went well. We are very pleased
with
the tip and it's installation. Really finishes off the wing and looks
great.
I started the installation of the right tip tonight. After cutting off
most
of the flange (a slight amount of radius is still left ) I fitted the tip
to
the end of the wing. Though there is still a lot of trimming to do, there
seems to be, at this point, a significant concave area being produced in
the
bottom of the wing tip starting aprox 3" inboard from the tip's outer
radius
and flowing to the tip's inboard edge that attaches to the wing tip rib.
The "flat" area toward the trailing edge area of the tip also seems to be
"warped" though most of this area gets cut away.

When the two tips are compared, the right one (now installing) seems to be
narrower in the area of the spar compared to the one we just installed. It
may be that once the rest of the radius is cut off and the trailing edge
area is trimmed all will fall into place. I just remember the left tip
fitting well at this stage of the installation process.

I guess there is no harm in continuing at this point to see if the tip
settles in correctly. I will proceed with the installation Wed. night.

I just thought I would communicate my concerns before proceeding. My gut
feeling is that we are dealing with a poorly molded tip and a replacement
may be needed.

I will check my email before going to the shop in case you have any
thoughts
or words of wisdom as I proceed.

Hi Don,
No you are not imagining things, the two tips are slightly different. We
have had to cut and reglass the right tip on the machines we have fitted
tips to here in the shop.
The last one we had to cut the tip at the front, at the extreme radius of
the leading edge and it popped into shape.

Thanks Bob,
There very well may be Hoerner Tips (not sure why they were not an original
design item?) and a STOL kit in our Super Moose's future, but for now Randy
and I wrastled the less then accurately molded right tip into position and
it came out OK after adding a couple support angles to the lower surface to
take out some concave wave.

We will have time in the future to add mods as they become available.
RIGHT NOW IT'S Build with safety as #1 priority and ...

GET HER FLYING !!!!!!!!
