Just a quick note... I've had several request over time to send the entire
database of the list archives to folks so they can browse them offline...
the newsgroup setup will allow exactly this, as all messages can be
downloaded and then viewed offline. I have done just this on one of my
systems because I wanted to know how much space it was going to take... well
the murphy-rebel archives of 5200+ messages is about 25 MB, and the
old-murphy-rebel archives at 2000+ messages and growing (as I slowly plug
the old archives in.... only about 4000 messages to go :-( ) is only about
10 MB... the rebel-ramble with 235 messages is insignificant. Depending on
your connection speed this could take a while to download... I did it at
work in about 2 hours. It's certainly do-able for anybody with a cable or
DSL connection. If you're still dailing up and want to try it, I'd suggest
starting it before dinner, and checking on it in the morning!

Mike

Mike,

Did that last night and it works great. I can now research those "Ontario
Mods" without server/connection delays. Thanks!!

Mike,
Works great. However, I noticed that a most messages area about 1k or less,
but one or two are much larger ( see murphy-rebel newsgroup, 9/22/2002
thread from Bob Kimball titled Elevator Mod (with picture) - 429k). The
interesting thing is that those messages had attachments. The REALY
interesting (and somewhat humorous) thing is that the photo attachments did
not come up on any of those messages, except one. You guessed it, it was
from Bob Patterson, our beloved photo-attachment and Microsoft hater (see
rebel ramble newsgroup, 7-7-2002 titles Reble Ramble 2002). See also "An
approch to life.." 9/17/2001 (724k) and "For More Power..." 10/2/2001
(10/2/2001 ) 192k, both from CVDH with non-photo attachments. By the way,
using the "Find" command in Microsoft Outlook Express makes it easy to
search and locate within the entire newsgroup to retrieve data on any word
from anyone no matter how deeply buried in the text. And you can sort by
just about anything, which is how I found the above by sorting on message
size.
And last, but not least, if a gem of a message was located in the past, can
it be responded to? Will it be cataloged in the message thread? Does the
entire newsgroup database need to be downloaded again or will normal
synchronization just pick up the new message in the proper thread? Many can
provide valuable additions to the body of builder knowledge with their
creative solutions to a problem that has come up in the past, but they were
not at that step at that time.

Chuck, I didn't disable attachments until recently... that's why some of the
messages have them, and some don't. The ones that don't still indicate that
they do, because the system accepts them as e-mail into the "e-mail"
conference that does accept attachments... it then strips the attachment once
it moves the message into the archive conference. This system still needs
some work to function cleanly.

Regarding replies to "old" messages... if using a news reader it will place
the message into the thread replied to... even if it is 2 years old. Your
reader will pull this with any sync config... but I suggest that you use
the "all messages" option if you want the entire archive available for
searching. Also, make sure you turn off the option (under
tools/options/maintenance) to delete new messages X days after downloading...
otherwise all those "old" messages you downloaded will disappear shortly.
Anyone viewing the web based archives will see your reply to an "old" message
at the end of the list. The web site doesn't display the threads properly,
but instead displays them in message number order, that is, the order they
were added to the database. With the newsgroup as large as it is, it may be
difficult to find that new message, but you'll know it's there because it will
be bold, and of course it displays the (number) of new messages next to the
newsgroup name.
