Hello Rebel Group:

I have just completed the FUS-30 tailcone wrap and vertical fin
assembly. The inside tailcone floor and corner wraps have been drilled,
clecoed and ready for final install.

The next step in the manual calls for starting work on the forward cabin
assembly. However, before I commence, I was wondering if now is a good
time to rivet the tailcone floor down. I would like to get it
permanently attached, but I don't want any gotchas back there at a later
date.

Note: The firewall will NOT be cut back and an O-320 will be hung on the
nose. I am assuming that the battery, ELT etc. will have to be installed
as far aft in the tailcone section as possible.

My questions are, what has everyone done to locate and mount the
battery, ELT's and route the electrical wiring through this area? Has
anyone run conduit under the floor skin in lieu of making the wire runs
along the FUS sides? (I know that there is the carrythrough obstacle to
contend with forward). If "the path of least resistance" is running the
wiring down the sides and nothing gets routed under the aft floor, can I
be comfortable about riveting the floor down at this time (except for
the forward row of rivets at Bulkhead "A") before I start on the cabin?

I recall a (Wayne's) post about someone mounting a tray and battery on
the fuselage side but failed to locate it in the archives (I did find
the posts about using Odessy Batteries though).

Hi Terry !

Hope you doubled up on the FUS-30, one of the necessary
"Ontario mods." ! This involves putting a second FUS-30 over
top of the original - it can be trimmed at the top front, but
should pick up the vertical spar at the back and some of the
top bulkhead, and extend forward of the fromt tailspring bolt
by an inch or more. It is sealed on with lots of Polyfiber
Epoxy primer brushed on between layers. and rivetted wet.

This will prevent cracks up the side of the rudder
post caused by higher side loads - bigger engines, heavier weights.
We've seen lots of these on early Rebels, so now's the time to
do this !

Keep your wiring up along the fuse side, where you can
get at it later, if necessary ! Anything buried under the floor
will be un-maintainable !!! By all means, use rigid PVC piping
or flexible Polyurethane tubing to run the wires down - it makes
it easier to pull new ones through, and tidies things up, too.
Same trick can be used in wings - and run wires down the struts,
so they are easy to route behind the panel.

The Odyssey batteries can be mounted on the shelf at the
side of the rear floor, to leave more space open for sleeping.

Terry,

I riveted my tailcone floor down(and the corner wraps)from bulkhead B aft. I
left the corner wraps between A & B clecoed until I get to the forward floor
construction.

My thoughts and the materials were there, but elected to not install this mod.
The plane is going directly on amphib floats, so with my work schedule/time and
the airplane going on amphibs and not subjected to tailwheel forces, I figured
it was not needed. I did purchase the extra FUS-30 though. I suppose if I got
beat up enough for not accomplishing this, I could go back and install the

Yes. I did just that when I built the wings. I left plenty of wire to go down
the struts and into the cabin forward of the instrument panel.

bulkhead at "A"?

Terry,

I am flying an 0320 with the firewall in the original position. I located the battery and ELT on the floor between the bulkheads just forward of the elevator pulleys. My empty C of G worked out at 9.97. I ran a #4 welding cable to the solenoid and starter and have not experienced a lack of cranking power. It has not gone through a winter yet. I did not put it under the floor for ease of access.

So far, at the stage I'm at, I can't think of any reason not to. At the time I
wasn't sure how things were going to shake out in this area so I elected to
leave it. I'm not planning to run anything under the tailcone floor.

Hi Bob,
Your comment about doubling FUS-30 was very timely. I have just
developed a crack in mine after a TTAF of 340 hrs.

I have the ultralight Rebel. I'm just getting ready to put it away for
the winter, so the repair will have to wait until the spring.
