Nicopress sleeves
Nicopress sleeves
FWIW - I just noticed MAM sent the plain copper nicopress sleeves, 18-3-M.
AC 43.13 recommends the plated sleeves, 28-3-M with Stainless cable.

Gee Scott I had to put my glasses on to even see that little asterisk in
43-13. Don't think I've ever noticed a plated sleeve on a Rebel. The ASS
book lists them as zinc plated. Please copy us with MAM's reply if you
plan to ask them about this.

I noticed this many moons ago, but considering I hadn't seen any corrosion
problems I kept my mouth shut on this one. Maybe I should have opened it,
but I didn't think it was a strength/safety issue. IF you are near salt air
might be worth the $2 US to use the plated ones. Listed in ACS at only 24
cents each and you only need 8 to do all the cables in a plain Rebel.
Probably about double that in the SR.
Also check your cable to make sure it is even stainless before you bother.
If a magnet sticks it ain't stainless, it's galvanized. I have found both
shipped out of MAM over my 9+ year period working with their products.
Cheers,
Wayne

I also asked Brian at MAM about using copper sleeves with ss cable. He said
it was alright although I've heard otherwise. My manual indicates putting
two crimps in the sleeves which I did and then cut them off putting three
crimps in the new ones.
Good Luck

I also noticed that in the corrosion section of 43.13 it puts stainless and
copper in the same metal group meaning there shouldn't really be a corrosion
problem..go figure.
I'm gonna use plated because I have them already.

Well yes 43.13 lists both metals as fairly corrosion resistant by
themselves. However they look like they might be quite capable of
causing electrolytic corrosion when in contact with each other, which I
presume is the reason for the plating... Wish I'd known about the plated
ones before I installed mine.

Hi Wayne
You are right. Just trying to get a rise out of you. The stainless often
used for high temperature use e.g. the 400 series is magnetic.
Cheers again

Nicopress sleeves
Questions on the length & material for my nicropress sleeves. Aircraft
Spruce has two part #'s
(http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/a ... opress.php ) 18-3-M &
28-3-M with the first being standard copper and the latter being zinc plated
copper. My 1/8" 7x19 cable is stainless steel. The book on the sleeve
swager (http://www.loosnaples.com/oval-sleeves- ... pr-51.html ) lists
a stainless sleeve. What material should I be using?
The book on the hand swager I have
(http://www.loosnaples.com/how-to-use-a-1-sc-pg-3.html ) recommends 3 swages
for 1/8" cable. The 18-3-M (I'm assuming that's the part #'s of what I
have; I got them a couple of years ago) copper ovals I do have are 9/16"
long. These do not appear long enough such that after I do the first,
middle, compression there will be enough room left for additional
compressions fore and aft (for a total of 3 of course).
I have some existing aileron cables that I am redoing (that's what prompts
these questions). Their sleeves have only two swages, and the sleeves
appear to be the same length as the existing blanks that I already have.
Hence, another reason why I'm concerned that there is a longer sleeve
available that would be used for applications requiring 3 swages.
Input please.
Thank you,
Ted
