Don, I saw a question about using a hinge mate on
elevator and thought I should toss this out to you and
others before you install your elevator.
I was at Arlington on Wednesday and saw there have
been some gussets added under the outer stab hinge
brackets on the Moose. They wrap around onto the end
rib. May have even been some more channel riveted onto
the aft stab spar under that outer hinge too. I only
got to speak with Doug for a few minutes, but sounds
like they were getting some cracks out there. I see no
mention of it yet on the tech page and the paint wasn't
touched up over the rivets yet so I suspect they did
this just before heading to Arlington.
I'll post a picture when I get home from work. That
won't be until Monday the 15th.
The fast build Moose sitting on the prototype floats
sure looked cool, however I did notice the aft spar of
the right wing had a fairly good size dent. Jeezzz I
hope the Pacific is calm. The container with our wings
is in transit from Manila. Our first set of wings got
bent on the way over 4 months ago.
Scott

Elevator/Stab hinge reinforce
Scott,
Thanks for the heads up. I will look for the picture you post.
I would hope MAM would get a bulletin out ASAP if there needs to be some
beefing up at the hinge.
I am heading to Oshkosh next Friday and will check it out.
Thanks again,
Don

Elevator/Stab hinge reinforce
If you haven't closed your SR3500 Stab yet, and are using a Radial Engine,
DON'T!!!!!!! I know we have been here before with the elevator, but now your
stab is going to need a bit of work. Better now than after your spiffy paint
job!!
The factory Moose has experienced some cracking from the radius of the outer
hinge bolt holes, as the paddle props slow LARGE pulses try to get the hinge
to take the web (rib) with it and causes the cracking. MAM's current
retrofit (as seen in "inspector" Aldrich's photo) is to put an "L" shaped
bracket bolted under the hinge and then riveted around onto the end rib,
with lots of Proseal for good measure. Future upgrades will probably be a
full length spar doubler, instead of the current partial one, but yet to be
determined. Apparently this cracking is also happening with the outboard
aileron hinges on the wing. Both only on the Radial powered SR's. Service
bulletins are most likely to come in the near future, but thought I should
get this out to you in case I can save same drilled out rivets in the mean
time!!
Cheers,
Wayne G. O'Shea
