REBEL AIR SPEED INDICATOR

Post by Ian Donaldson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:13 pm

G'day

I was suspicious about the airspeed readings that I was getting, so today I took a GPS along and after flying triangular courses, I have come to the opinion that when the ASI is showing 70k I am in fact doing about 85k. (that's a more reasonable cruise sped)

I have fitted the standard factory supplied pitot on the left wing, and in the position recommended by the factory.

Does any one have any suggestions as to how I can get a more accurate reading!

Thanks and regards

Ian ...

I made my own $1 special ....it hangs UNDER the wing and has both pitot & static tubes on it ....and it works very well ( cross checked against the GPS)

Not much help for your application though ...sorry

G'day Rick

Thanks for your reply.

I really don't know what the problem is, but I'm sure someone out there will!

How is the planning for the trip to the Rock going?

Ian Have you checked to make sure there aren't any leaks in the pitot
line. Just gently blow into the tube while someone else watches the
indicator when it shows about 100k slip your finger over top the tube and
wait the airspeed should stay the same if it doesn't you have a leak.

Ian

Disconnect the static line under the inst. pannel and it will give you a much closer ASI reading. Many small GA aircraft ( Cessna, Piper ) use the cabin air with a small valve for the Alt static source incase the outside port freezes over. I had the same problem as you untill I installed the static port on the side of the aft fuselage.

G'day Rick

Well now you must be excited!

Sounds like you will be having some fun.

You just never know, I might be able to extend the 25 mile testing radius to include Echuca.

I hope all goes well for your team. Please post some details as you go.

Regards

Ian Donaldson

PS Thanks for the tip on not blowing too hard into the pitot tube.
