Are there any rules or forms to fill out prior to bringing a US expermental
airplane into Canada?

Al,
I found these on the AOPA site. First part below seems to be a lot of
words to say carry all the normally required documents. The second
checklist looks more useful and mentions a Canadian requirement to show
proof of liability insurance.

The GATE (telephone notification) program is still suspended. I didn't see
it mentioned but you still need 12 inch N-numbers, right?

I'm prety sure the 12" n number requirement is just for mexico

Hey Al,

This is not a direct reply to your question, but maybe of some
assistance. I don't know whether you followed a thread on the Rebel
list here a few months back, but we had Curt Martin fly over to
Windsor, from Pontiac, Michigan. Below is the information I sent to
him about landing here. He had no problems whatsoever. At the last
Rebel Builders meeting on May 5, A gentleman named Bernie Achat (sp)
flew his Elite in from Batavia, New York, and they stopped at
Hamilton, Ontario, to clear Customs. (They also went to visit the
Canadian Warbirds Aviation Museum on the Hamilton field, so paid no
landing fees.). No problems at all for them.

Anyway, this is what I sent to Curt.

"I did a bit of checking this afternoon, and found out that to enter
Canada by private plane, you and anyone with you will require two
pieces of photo ID, such as a passport, drivers license, birth
certificate, etc. Also, you have to phone ahead to TRC (??? I don't
know what that means, but that's what she called it) at 1-888-CANPASS
(that's 1-888-226-7277) a minimum of 1 hour, and preferably 2 hours,
before landing in Canada, and report your intentions to them (TRC).
They will then fax that information to the port of entry (Windsor is
YQG by the way). On landing, tell the tower you want to go to Gate 4,
FBO Customs. There is no charge for Customs service at Windsor
between 0800 and 2359 hours local time. You do not have to "check"
with them (Customs) to leave Canada, but you probably have to do
something in reverse to head back home. I would think that you would
be best to file your flight plan prior to doing the Customs thing for
both ways.
Canada has no problems with VFR flights, that is relative to 9-11 and
the US requirements for IFR in Class B air-space, but I don't know
about the other way on your returning. You probably know a ton more
about any of this than I do, but this is just in case. "

Drew, you are right. There is no ADIZ or DEWIZ going into Canada so don't
need the 12 inch.


CFR Part 45, Subpart C.

45.29(h) After March 7, 1988, each operator of an aircraft penetrating an
ADIZ or DEWIZ shall display on that aircraft temporary or permanent
nationality and registration marks at least 12 inches high.

Hi Al !

You should have no problem at all ! Curt & Dave often fly
up for our Rebel Builders meetings, and tell us it's harder to get
back into the US than it is to come to Canada !! :-)

We have had several American aircraft fly with us on Rebel
Rambles, and we cross the border several times heading west and back.
We've even found a few places where you can cross WITHOUT filing
a flight plan !!! ;-) :-) (Always looking for novel ways
to ease the paperwork ...) ;-)

Hope you can join us on a Ramble sometime !
