SR-Rudder RU-420 shortage

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

Hello again! This SR is starting to piss me off, or maybe it's just my mood
today with this damn backhoe of mine that is keeping me from working on the
SR, as it blew the right rear axle seal out this morning (as well as it
looks like the bearings) and now I'm having it picked up by OnTrac to put a
few more "Grand" into it!

Anyhow, once I finally got back at the rudder this afternoon, to do the 3500
upgrade plate and gussets, I was not only short the previously mentioned
.040 RWST for the plates, I also found that the supplied RU-420 material is
not long enough to make 4 pieces. It is supplied at 21" long and to pick up
4 rivets on the rib flanges like shown in the upgrade instructions the
gussets need to be cut just shy of 5 3/4" each. That is 23" total if you
have a narrow blade cutting the pieces!

I am sharing this stuff, for those that haven't got here yet, so you can
measure what you have and inform MAM of your shortages before you are trying
to work on the stuff and have to stop and wait for material. I know all of
you don't have a 9 year collection of scraps and sheet stock, as I do, to
keep you going through dilemma's like these.

Wayne G. O'Shea

SR-Rudder RU-420 shortage

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:47 pm

In response to my own e-mail, Brian Godden has informed me that the Quick
builds Rudder reinforcements are being assembled picking up only 3 rivets on
the rudder rib flanges, "which will be more than strong enough" (not the 4
as shown in the upgrade instructions). If you do it picking up only 3 rivets
the supplied 21" is more than long enough.

There must also be different skin prepunched hole spacings out there, as he
also says that the factory prototype only needed 5" pieces to pick up 4
rivets on the rib flange. On #017 that I am working on it required 5 3/4" to
pick up the 4 flange rivets, leave 5/16" edge at the rear and make it to the
front face of the cable attach horn.

Please don't bug MAM for more RU-420 and just do it picking up 3 flange
rivets if so required, to have enough material for the process!!
