I'm asking this for someone else (my dad).
Are there any Rebels out there running with the Jabiru engine? Any planned?
And, what do you think of putting a Jabiru in a Rebel (80hp as compared to
the Rotax 912 80hp).
The Jabiru's run at a higher RPM (3300 RPM), and there's been some debate
about using a shorter prop on a plane that's essentially a STOL plane.
Beyond that fact, I haven't heard too many negative comments about the
engine.

Rebel + Jabiru
Rebel + Jabiru
There is a brief discussion of this in the archives but my memory is
that you probably need at least the 6 cylinder (120hp) Jabiru to equal
the performance of the 80 hp Rotax 912. Theory seems to predict this and
the comparison on the Zenith 601 seemed to confirm it for our speed
range.

There is a Rebel flying here in Australia with a Jabiru 6.
There are some pictures in the archives under "Nosegear Rebel" that you
might like to look at.
I personally don't know how it performs, but perhaps we could get you in
touch with the builder if you are interested.
I had the choice of fitting a Jabiru, but elected to run with the Rotax
100hp engine instead.

Rebel + Jabiru
I bought a Jabiru 3300 for my Rebel. It seems that engine choice for most
experimental aircraft has always been a hot topic. I wanted a newer style
engine to put on my new airplane instead of, say, an 0-290. I currently fly a
50 year old aircraft with a 50 year old engine. My reason for building a
Rebel was because I wanted a NEW airplane.
The Jabiru has changed the intake manifold and now gets 120 HP at 3050 rpm. I
hope to get a static RPM of around 2700-2800 which will give me more the
100HP. Normal cruise will also be in this RPM range. Prop length will be
around 66 or 68 inches, but I really haven't shopped for one yet.
The geared engine on the 100 hp Rotax will develop more static thrust due to
the longer prop and gear box reduction, similar to a constant speed prop.
The Rotax is obviously a proven choice, but I preferred to go with the Jabiru
engine due to personal preferences (not everyone likes to fly behind Rotax
engines).
