Rebel - ailerons adjustments

Thanks for your responses.

I particularly like the thought of making some wedge shaped spacers. That is
a really easy fix, and would solve the problem.
Don't know why I did not think of that!

I had fitted the ailerons before covering and painting, and the fit was OK.
Now the ailerons rub. I really don't want
to cut the rear of the trailing edge. It would spoil my nice paint! But if I
have to I will.

Hi Ian !

One thing you can do to avoid wear & tear on the ailerons -
find a gliding club or glider supplier. They have a wide, clear
teflon tape that is used on gliders to allow very tight gaps between
the wing skin & aileron - the tape goes on the aileron and reduces
friction so the skin doesn't dig in ... The added advantage is
much better airflow over the wing.

Hi IAN:

I had the same problem. My first wing I built with the old manual, the
spacers weren't as big. I cut 1/8" off the skin,then another 1/8th. Not
wanting to have a rippled edge I lay the skin on the table and clamped a
straight edge on it and sliced it off with a knife. This did a good job.
At the factory (MAM) they said as BOB suggested, put an anti wear pad on the
aileron, This reduces the gap to almost zero keeping smooth air flow.

Thanks for your response. I really don't want to cut the trailing edge as it
is now painted.

What I have done is to make some tapered spacers that have given me the
necessary gap.

I will get some tape asBOBP suggests.

Thanks for your hints. I have made tapered washers that seem to do the
trick.

I will investigate that glider tape. Seems a good idea to me!

I'm using tape I got at lee valley tools. They call it low friction tape
and sell it for use on tool fences. It's a clear UHMW tape 1" wide and
about 1/16" thick. I only used it over the rivet heads and so far its
working great.

Lee Valley tools is a canadian company that specializes in high end
woodworking and gardening tools they have a great catalog and if you ever
get into one of their stores you'll have a very hard time leaving.
Tool fences are the guides on table saws and the like that help you cut in
a straight line.
UHMW stands for ultra high molecular weight. I checked the roll and theres
nothing on it saying who the manufacturer is.
