Has anyone ever mounted the speed cowl to a 0320 Rebel without a prop spacer?
Or just a 1" spacer in place of the MAM 2" spacer? Does the spinner bulkhead
flange clear the cowling? I would like to keep the prop as close to the CofG
as possible, since I didn't cut back the firewall. Is this even an issue?

Bruce, Howard's original installation, on his speed cowling, was a McCauley
prop with a 1 1/2" spacer. To use the MAM 13" spinner I had to trim the back
plate down to 3/4" width (and the spinner to match) to give a 1/4"
clearance. I think it would be hard to get the cowl to fit properly on the
engine with no spacer (but with some tweaking you might pull it off). I
imagine you can get down to a one inch spacer, but it might take some glass
work!

Just curious if the UHS spinner will work with the Sensenich 2 blade metal
prop? If yes, does it come fitted with the prop holes, or do you have to cut
them out yourself?

Sold a 10" one to Bob Johnson and it came with the bolt holes predrilled
from UHS, but since there are so many blade profiles you are left to cut
your own blade holes out (weren't you Bob??)!

Using the UHS spinner would allow you to have the prop at least 3/4" (The
MAM spinner's backing plate is about 1 1/8" but can be trimmed down) closer
to the cowling, as they (UHS) don't use a backing plate behind the prop.
With UHS spinners everything bolts onto the front of the prop and the
spinner wraps around enough to cover the blade width (or at least most of
it, depending on the spinner diameter used).

Walter and all: Yes I bought a 10" UHS spacer from Wayne O. and I am real
happy with it. I did have to cut the slots for the prop blade ,a Sensenich
metal 74"-58" pitch, But it real was not difficult. Just take your time and
cut & fit, cut & fit. Dermal tools are worth their weight in gold.-Bob J.

Bob's 10" UHS spinner was for the original style "piper" nose bowl.

For the speed cowling, MAM's spinner is actually 13" in diameter to match
the premoulded "circle" in the speed cowling (even though it seems to be
referred to as a 14" spinner for some reason by MAM!). UHS does not sell a
13" but has a huge 14" spinner, that I recently had to replaced on a
customer rebuild job (only because it got smushed in the nose over!). Seems
to work okay, now that UHS is laying up a few extra layers of fiberglass
during their construction in comparison to their earlier ones.

Walter, I will send you a couple shots of the 14" installed on a Rebel.
Although it also has the original style piper bowl on it, but needed a 14"
spinner to clear the hub for a 4 blade Warp Drive!

I am using a UHS spinner right now with my Warp Drive. I think it is a 12 ",
as it is slightly smaller than the speed cowl. I am using a 2" spacer with
mine, but have about 3/4 " clearance from the cowl. Unlike your advice, I
did my cowl per MAM's instructions before I bought my prop and spinner. I
believe I could get away with a 1 " spacer and cut back slightly the back
side of the spinner. However, I think the extra mass of the 2 inch spacer
might be helping to keep the Warp from cracking with the O320.

I would like to get a Sensenich as a second prop, and then compare
performance to my Warp Drive. I will need a new spinner then, so wasn't sure
if UHS made them for these as well. I would prefer one that has all the
holes cut out, which is the way it came for my Warp Drive. That made it very
easy to install and it fit perfectly. It was also perfectly centred and
balanced, which probably wouldn't be the case if I had to cut it.

Wayne,

You say you trimmed the back plate and spinner down to 3/4". Are you speaking
about the flange on the back plate? How big is the flange on the MAM 13"
spinner before you trimmed it? I order one a month ago but have not received
it yet.

Have you used the UHS spinner and would you recommend it? I've heard some say
a spinner must have a back plate and front plate to be sufficiently strong
enough and not risk in-flight failure of the spinner.

Bruce, I sell the UHS spinner in Canada, as an authorized dealer, so I guess
I would have to recommend it!!!! Have had one (10") on my Rebel for over 6
years and it still looks like new. As for a spinner having to have a back
and a front plate, there are MANY C/Speed props out there that don't have a
front plate in the spinner assemblies. The UHS only has a front plate, so I
would suggest it is better than just having a back plate like a lot of the
C/S prop spinners, since the one and only backing plate on the UHS spinner
is more central to the entire spinner than just running a back plate.
(follow that?!?!)

Hi Bruce !

It might be possible to get it to work with a 1" spacer, but
you wouldn't believe how much that engine hops around on the dynafocal
mounts !! You could end up with scratches on the cowl - at best, IF
you were lucky - or ....

The firewall on XWI isn't cut back, and it has the full standard
spacer. The CofG works out to 8.1" empty - this is NO PROBLEM for flying,
so - you are right - it's probably not an issue worth losing sleep over !!

Well Bruce, I took a peek at mine to refresh my memory, but if you tried to push the cowel back even 1" it will start putting the glass into the flywheel ring gear, altenator and starter. The cylinder on the co-pilots side(Lyc and Continental are oppsite and
I mix that up unless I'm looking at it) will also be to close. It might even get into the carb in the intake area. If CoG is a worry, read the archives on those who havn't moved the firewall back. I think they just throw their tool kit in the tail cone and go
