Navaid Devices Autopilot
Navaid Devices Autopilot
Have any SR or Rebel builders installed one of the
Navaid Devices autopilots in their plane? I was
curious as to how they installed it...ie servo
location, etc.

Navaid Devices Autopilot
Jason,
I have installed the Navaid autopilot. The servo is located on the left
side, inside the wing root. It drives off the aileron cable between the door
post and the pulley that turns the cable to the mixer. I have not connected
the cable to the servo yet, but it looks like everything will fit ok, I say
that a lot.....

Does the Navaid provide some way to just clamp onto the existing cable? All
you have to do is position the device near the cable, then clamp on?

Navaid Devices Autopilot
Navaid gives one of two choices either a cable harness that goes around the
servo capstan then attaches to the aileron cable or a push-pull tube
attachment on the servo. The aileron cable is tangent to the servo capstan.
The only working Navaid that I have seen was on an RV4, he used the
push-pull tube attachment and it was under the floor attached to the control
stick. I prefer the push-pull tube, but could not find a place to install it
with out a lot of work.

Hum!? My thought was to install the servo with the arm
just forward of the crank-arm of the torque-tube in
the wing. However, I see a bunch of potential
problems...
1)May not be enough room
2)Hard to access for maintenance...plus requires new
inspection holes
3)makes that wing heavy (probably insignificant, but
light weight times long arm=a moment worth
consideration)
My dilema is there is a five month queue for the
navaid Autopliots right now and and you have to let
them know if you want a servo with a capstan or with a
push-rod.
Al, do you happen to have any digital photos of your
installation? I don't want to trouble you if you dont.
Would be curious to see where you are installing it.

I also plan on installing the NAVAID devise but as I'm planning on using
a 'T' bar and control wheels I'll try and install under the cockpit
floor.
Also plan on adding an EZ-Trim altitude hold. About $300.00 and uses the
MAC trim Servo. For a poor mans 2 axes autopilot.

Hi Monty,
Thanks for the lead on the EZ-Trim, it looks like a nice addition to the
Navaid. Am I correct that I would tap into the up down connections on the
hat switch for the elevator trim? My trim system has the MAC relay, required
for the dual control stick switches. Is that the same relay that EZ-Trim
shows in their installation info?

I contacted Cliff recently regarding his EZ-Trim and he told me he is not
offering them any longer. He said that after KitPlanes magazine ran an
article on it he was overwhelmed. He will however provide the pre-printed
circuit board along with parts lists and schematics so you can build your
own. He charges $20 for all this... not a bad deal if your handy with a
soldering iron and a schematic.
