EGT/CHT INSTRUMENTS

Have you seen the RMI (Rocky Mountain Instruments) all in one panel? Go to
http://www.rkymtn.com/

The micro monitor is something like 21 instruments in one including CHT and
EGT with alarms etc. I don't know much more about it but hear the owner is
easy to work with.

EGT/CHT INSTRUMENTS

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi Mike !

FWIW I'm pretty underwhelmed by the Westach stuff - there's
a reason it's cheap !

Have flown several aircraft with the EI scanners - they're
GREAT ! There are several models, from under $1,000 to about $1,800,
depending on the smarts you want in them. They monitor all 4 CHTs
and EGTs, and light up if there's a temperature discrepancy - the
fancy ones are programmable. (that's Electonics International...)

There are a couple of integrated electronic "all-in-ones"
out there - RMI is one, Grand Rapids is another ... Just watch
that you don't get one that has to be OFF when you start - by the
time it gets ON and reading, you might have cooked the engine
because there was no oil pressure !! Also watch that you can change the
display to ANY combination of guages that YOU want to see on ONE
display - some of them have fixed pages, and you have to cycle
through 5 pages to see what you need ! These things can monitor
everything - RPM, oil pressure & temp., OAT, and lots of stuff
you really don't need often ....

A fuel flow guage is one thing I never thought I'd need -
until I flew the Super Rebel ! This HAS to be THE most useful
tool you can get - it'll pay for itself in fuel savings in a few
months ! Once you know your usual flow at a given altitude,
you can almost immediately lean to near that flow, then check the
EGTs for fine tuning... Of course, it's MUCH more valuable for
the larger engines. ;-)

EGT/CHT INSTRUMENTS

Post by Al & Deb Paxhia » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Mike,
I went with the a smart scanner about $1800 US. The engine is the largest
cost item and what I depend on the most. I have found for me by the time I
see a problem on CHT and EGT gage in cruise flight it's too late to save
anything. I have trouble scanning instruments when things sound fine.
Having a scanner with high and low limits and a warning light may save my
bacon one day.

Mike Kimball

EGT/CHT INSTRUMENTS

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

After months of reading items on the list it finally dawned on me just now
what FWIW stands for: For What Its Worth! Of course! Just like in the
space biz that I'm in, SOH stands for State of Health and I assume everybody
knows that. Now if I could just figure out what all those weird colons and
dots are for that appear at the end of so many messages. :-)

EGT/CHT INSTRUMENTS

Post by cgill » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:16 pm

Mike,
I put the JPI EDM 700 with 40 hour data memory in
our Super Rebel. This unit has been invaluable
for two major reasons. First, being able to see
EGT and CHT on all six cylinders on a homebuilt
really lets you know what is going on with the
engine. We had some cylinders running at normal
temperatures and other cylinders running too
hot. We would have never seen this with a single
probe.

Second, the data memory is really nice for
reviewing your engine performance in the comfort
of your home. I'm only 36 and I forget what a
gauge tells me tens seconds after looking it.
Trying to remember what temperature gauges were
telling me the afternoon after a flight was a
lost cause.

FWIW...Chris, SR #025, N4965
