OK guys !....

I've bitten the bullet and gone out ....bought lots of wood.....and now I'm gonna carve
myself a prop' !

......problem is......I'm not 100% sure WHAT pitch I need .

It seems obvious that 72" Diameter is pretty much standard....but WHAT is the pitch figure
for a Rebel with an 0-235 Lycoming ???

If anyone out there has an 0-235 with a WOODEN propeller.....PLEASE let me know the
numbers from it !!!

(Greg Board,...the original Rebel agent for Australia had a propeller that MAM sent him / told him
to buy, that he was told, was "THE " propeller for his Rebel with a standard 118 HP 0-235......
when he put it on, the engine wouldn't do over 2000 RPM !?!?...so he cut 2" off each end...
still no good ..... I r....e...a....l...l....y... don't want to go through that kind of stuff )

Hi Rick !

Good luck !!! You might check out the info at Sensenich Wood
Prop's site : http://www.sensenichprop.com/

Lots of good stuff there ! You should make some allowance
for the extra horses that you've got, though- perhaps add another
inch or 2 of pitch .... Most homebuilders end up with THREE
props - one 'way too fine, one too coarse, and the one they're flying ! ;-)


I'm guessing that you've got your hands on one of those inexpensive
prop carving machines ???

Hey guys !.......

I asked a couple of days back for your opinions regarding a WOODEN propeller
(Diameter & Pitch)..........and the silence is DEAFENING !!!

You mean to tell me that NOBODY over there flys with a wooden prop' ?!?!?!?!?

I asked Murtech for the numbers for a wooden propeller to suit :
1) an 0-235 118 HP Rebel
2) an 0-320 150 HP Rebel
(I figured that the "right" propeller for our 130 HP version HAS to be somewhere in
the middle of these two .....)

and the advice I just received said "......72" X 50 to 52" in metal or wood "
(this is the same advice they gave Greg Board (the ex-Rebel agent over here) , a few
years back ...and his NEW 0-235 118 HP engine wouldn't even make 2000 RPM IN THE AIR !)

Greg got an aircraft designer down here to calculate the correct propeller...and after a few
experiments, it turned out to be 74" X 42" !!!......just a weeeeee bit off what MAM recommended. :-)

I'm quite willing to have a go at carving my own propeller....but I really want to get a few more
similar opinions before I start dissecting the rather expensive lump of timber I now have set
aside for the job !

Doesn't ANYONE over there fly with a wooden prop' ???

Hi Rick !

I had a look at the Sensenich web site that I suggested -

Oddly enough, the prop they recommend for the O-235 115 hp,
is a 74 x 44 !! Just about what your guy found ...

The O-290, 125 hp. suggestion is similar - 74 x 48, I think.

Sounds like 74 x 46 to 48 might be a good start. I guess you're
going to use several plies of wood, laminated, to avoid warping and
add strength ... There must be several sources on suggestions for
prop making, as well as drawings for those 'do-it-yourself' machines
to automate carving - anybody out there got a suggestion ???

I think it is a guessing game, if you bought 2 wooden props of the same pitch
and diameter from 2 manufacturers performance would differ. Shape would not
be the same. Early wooden props from Murphy's supplier were 72x48 if I
remember correctly. Sensenich on my 108hp 0-235 was 72x48 with static rpm of
2390, had it repitched to 50" and static dropped to 2330, {metal prop}.
Cruising at 110mph at 2500. If you make your own prop and get it perfect the
first time, I think it would be pure luck.

I have an O-290 - 125 - 130 HP. I'm running a WARNKE wood prop. It has 60
laminations. 70" x 56. On a standard day it climbs at 1100' +. Cruise at
2400 rpm is 110 mph - no fairings. Takeoff rpm = 2420.

The Piper Clipper with a 108 hp Lyc 0-235 used a 74 by 50 pitch Sensenich
propeller. The propeller Dia. lower limit is 72 inch. The Clipper is about
the same size and performance as the Rebel. Pitch and Dia for wood or metal
are essentially the same.

Rick, I had a MAM "recommended" Collin Walker 74 x 40 propellor on my 100
H.P ( yes that's ONE HUNDRED, was a PA-12 Engine). O-235-C and it was AWAY
TOO FINE. Read lined on takeoff roll, @ 2600 rpm (lower RPM rating why it
was 100 H.P. I believe and I think it is probably the same engine as the 108
H.P. rated one at 2800 RPM). Went from there to the Warp Drive, so I
wouldn't be a common statistic and own 3 propellors for it! I'm still using
the same W.D. on my 150 H.P. O-320-C2A (so that brings me back to one
propellor per engine!!) Now that I have just typed that, the prop may just
have been a great climb propellor if I had of just let it wind out to 2800
RPM.

The propellor that came off the amphib when it had the O-235-C2C in it was a
72 x 44 metal McCauley and it seemed to work okay for Bob, on that 108/115
H.P. engine.

I would start out carving a 76" long propellor with the pitch of a
recommended 74" prop. That way if it's too coarse you can trim 1/2" at a
time off the tips until you get what you want, giving you at least 4" in
diameter to play with, bringing her down to 72". A 76" propellor has LOTS of
clearance if operating on 8 x 6 tires.

Thanks Bob !

I gotta admit.....I looked at the site...but could find a "table" to
reference from...
getting home after working a 16 hour day on a boat and checking e-mails
at 11 at night is not conducive to full attentiveness :-(

I'll take all this advice to the Reg 35 Engineer and see what he has to say.
