Rebel "652"-Battery
Rebel "652"-Battery
Hi all; I have been quietly sitting in the background (actually trying to
finish my Rebel-painting and in final assembly) and would like some
suggestions in regards to a battery. I am powering with an O320 160 H.P. and
am locating the battery 1/2 way down the tail cone. I have not pulled the
firewall back and need the rear weight for C of G. I was thinking of a
reasonable sized "car" battery not only for the additional weight, but also
for the extra amps to help compensate for the longer leads. I understand
that it should probably be properly "boxed" and vented and also plan on both
in and out vent tubes to flush out those nasty fumes when a battery is being
charged. Any suggestion as to battery type and CCA's (cold cranking
amps)-Thanks Bob J.

I'm running an ODYSSEY dry cell no venting needed, no acid spills. They come
in different sizes PC925-470cca PC1200-630cca. They have a very long shelf
life. I've never had to worry about charging it up even after sitting all
winter it fired everything right up. I know they have a web site but don't
know the address. They're advertised in JEG'S, SUMMIT and other hotrod
catalogs.

Hi There,
Something that came up at my last service was that the battery should not be
placed over the elevator cables, apparently it has happened that an acid
leak has actually caused separation of the cables on a modified Cessna (not
a good look!).
Mine is on a mounting over the cables just forward of the rear pulley but is
a gelcell so no fumes and no leaks. ( I do check though!)
Cheers

Rebel "652"-Battery
Hey Bob it sounds like you've got things pretty well planned but I was
confused by one of your statements . I don't see any way that a battery with
more ampre capacity can compensate for long battery cables or small (awg)
battery cables or high resistance due to length . Only a higher voltage can
compensate for these. The deeper cycle battery will only be able to crank the
engine longer & heat up the cables and connections longer (and hotter ) while
still not starting the engine beause it will not turn over fast enough to
start due to too low a voltage because of the longer battery cables . I can't
believe I fit all of that into one sentence but it's all true Bob. The big
battery is a slightly more expensive form of lead ballast but a good enough
reason for your CG concerns but honestly won't help your cranking/starting
concerns at all . Only properly sized battery cables and good conections will
accomplish that. Good Luck . Chris . P.S. If you don't already have a
copy of Bob Nuckolls' Aeroelectric Connection please go online and consider
getting it . It is by far the best single source of Electrical Theory for
homebuilders . See WWW.aeroelectric.com And if you still want the ultimate
deep cycle battery go to WWW.optimabatteries.com.

The Odyssey battery I have cost $140. Optima batteries are a very good
product also BUT I'm pretty sure they weigh more because of the lead coil
system they use. Optima's go $130- $170.

Rebel "652"-Battery
To anyone interested
There is also a 16V-12V three post battery so you can run 16V to the starter
for those longer cables without as much voltage drop and great cranking
power. And the 12V post to run electronics. But it is a lead acid battery.
