Rebel bungee rings

G'day from Australia

I'm really sick of trying to get the bungee suspension to work!

I have tried to set the suspension up as detailed in the manual, using one length of bungee, but I cannot get it tight enough.

I could use the ready made rings, but owing to the poor exchange rate they would cost far too much.

I found in the archives a drawing on how to make your own rings, and that seems OK to me. Is it possible to make larger rings and double them over? This would mean that I would have to make only half the number of rings..

I would appreciate any advice

Hi Ian !

That's why we went to made-up rings ! ;-) It is almost
impossible to get it tight enough with just one length.

You <could> do double size rings - BUT.... they will be
VERY difficult to install. The single rings can go on easily with
a ratchet strap - hook the bungee over the inside bolt, fasten the
hook of the tie-down strap to the bottom of the bungee and the
other hook into the bottom of the gear tube. Tighten the ratchet
until the bungee reaches the bottom bolt, pop it on with a large
screwdriver, and repeat ! I suspect there would be too much force
needed to do a doubled ring this way.

I hope the later kits show putting both bungee bolts in
parallel to the fuse bottom - this makes it much easier to fit
a fairing over them. Early kits had the bolts staggered, like
a Cub.

Thanks for your response.

I got the idea of the double size rings from a friend that used them on his
Rebel Renegade. Seems to work OK.

I have the drawings from the archives and I just wonder why the rings are
stretched before lacing. Is there a reason for this? Could the rings just be
made a little smaller so they would have plenty of preload when they are
installed?

Ian, I wondered the same thing. It makes sense
through. If you lace with the bungee in the
relaxed state, the diameter is larger than when
it is in tension. The lacing will slip off as
the diameter gets smaller.

Hi Ian !

We've tried all the variations - single rings are easiest, but
try double if you want ...

The rings must be stretched before lacing, as they shrink in
diameter under tension. If you don't tie them when tensioned, they
shrink when installed, and the lacing slips off !!! :-(
