3500 upgrade
3500 upgrade
I have started on the upgrade.
On the horizontal stabilizer, I put some countersinks where there were no
external doublers. Now, with the upgrade parts, there are external
doublers. I don't think I can UN-countersink, I am sure that I will not
UN-countersink, so I will need a few new parts ( main spar, skin, cap spars,
some ribs, etc ) to complete. I can't blame the folks at Murphy - they
didn't call for the countersinks........
On the wing, I started the upgrade when only the spars had been assembled.
Ergo, changing the attach brackets and doublers on the rear spar; the new
attach brackets and spar (caps?, they used to be attach brackets) on the
leading edge spar was relatively simple.
I have not seen the parts or instructions for any modifications on the
fuselage - I assume they will be forthcoming in time.
I don't call myself a builder, this is a first for me, nor am I an A&P or
anything. That said, FWIW, if my wings had been fully assembled when I got
the upgrade parts, I think the wings would have stayed at 2500# and the
upgrade parts would have stayed in the box. I don't think I have the skill
to do what the folks at Murphy did.
Cheers, rj

3500 upgrade
RJ
DH had a mod for the Dash-8 or twin Otter that an AME friend completed.
It called for filling a countersunk hole prior to putting on a doubler.
What they used as a filler/spacer appeared to be a cs rivet with center
drilled out. You should have lots of them on the shop floor!!! If you
contact MAM let me know what they think. I hadn't dimpled the stab or
Elev but I did for just about everything else. My upgrade kit has yet to
be sent. My plan for the wing is not to worry about the work until after
I pull it apart then I'll have no choice.

3500 upgrade
Good suggestion, Warren !! I remember seeing those 'fillers'.
The rivet heads should work fine, especially if they're held in
with a good coating of epoxy primer, which should be there anyway.
