Control stick bending

A friend of mine who has cut his firewall back the 3" feels that he
needs to bend his control stick. First, have other builders out there
found this necessary, and if so, what method is used? The pipe bender
at the local garage can't bend 1" pipe. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Hi Clay

I purchased new control columns with about 3" more offset from MAM at
something like $25. ea. This puts your hand quite low at full aft stick
and may make full aft and full aileron awkward but it is an easy
workable fix. MAM would know the part number or I can try to find it if
you like.

Some guys have moved the control column torque tube back 3" but that
looked like a fair bit of work to me.

The make electrical conduit benders that will work with 1" pipe... check
your local hardware store.

Hi Clay,
We chose to move the control torque tube back after moving the fire wall on our aircraft, but the main reason was that my partner was a tall and large man, and when in the flying position for him, the back of his leg would have rested on the control tube. M
oving it back gave him the clearance he needed. One other thing we did was to install the torque tube bearing holder on the copilot end with rivetnuts. Now if we have to get under the panel for an extended period of time the torque tube can be moved out of th
e way. Much more comfortable. That can be done if you move the tube or not.
I must also admit that after riding in a J-3 on floats, I think we may have put way to many instruments in! :) :) Keep at it, it's worth it Curt N97MR

I moved my firewall back 3" and I also moved my stick back as well. (The
stick retains its original shape)
Reinforce the floor under the torque tube mounting brackets if you do.
I have a photo I can scan and send to you if you wish.

Since I have done this, the stick is back as far as I would like.
I couldn't move it back any more, or I'd hit my buddy's stomach during
flare-out.

MAM provides the correct stick with the right amount of bend for the
firewall back. No need to change that at all.
