IT'S HAPPENING IN CALGARY

Fuselage kit finally coming.Subaru EA 81 in mind.
Has anybody installed this engine? How far aft is the c of g of this engine as opposed to 0-320 lycosauras, is it a good idea to cut firewall back re: weight & balance, ease of landing.I will be installing floats hopefully before to long. All comments would be greatly appreciated.

No need to cut the firewall for an EA-81., but that engine will
be very anemic for floats ! There's only 80 to 100 hp ....

There is ONE other Rebel nearby with an EA-81 - haven't heard
if it's flying yet. Most builders prefer the EJ-22 or even better,
the new 2.5 liter engines, as they have 165 hp. My Rebel originally
had an EJ-22 (modified) in it, with the firewall in the regular place,
and it now has an O-320, again without moving the f/w. The CofG is
about 8.1 inches, but there's no handling problem. Perhaps for floats,
you might want to move it back ....

Have flown several Rebels with EJ-22's - VERY NICE ! Smooth,
quiet, and half the fuel of a Lycosaurus....

EA-81 on the Rebel is a nice match but I would
have to agree with Bob that a float plane it will
never be.
I can give you performance figures if you need

Listen to Bob," Do not deal with NSI." I personally had some dealings with
NSI about 4 years ago on a controlable pitch propeller. They promised
delivery in 60 days. I spent 1 1/2 years waiting and going to there shop
every two weeks and being lied to. I never did get there propeller and
fortunately I only lost a small deposit.

My hangar is located about 3000 feet from there shop at Arlington Airport.

Yes, I installed an EA-81 c/w Re-Drive 2.3:1 gear
from Karlo Kuhner in Canada. Fire wall NOT cut
back. CofG = 12.7
I use the following
Warp, 3-blade, 72" straight tip
Holley 1912, in flight adjustable mixture
VW Jetta Rad and swirl pot
Chevy Sprint Altenator 55 amp
Harley Davidson battery
Honda Civic starter
Stratus engine mounts
Homemade engine mount (6-point) and exhaust

I operate off a 800 ft grass strip with hazards
on both ends. (I keep my eyes closed on T/O and
Landing, scares me to look :-))

The following is solo with flying weight of 1150
lbs.

T/O 4200 RPM off the ground in 300 ft.
Climb 800-1000 ft/min @ 55-60 mph
Cruise 3200 RPM = 70 mph
3700 RPM = 85 mph (very comfortable)
4000 RPM = 95-100 ??
4200 RPM = 105 mph
I will post a picture for those interested.

I will be the first to admit that this
performance is not for everyone. If you fly
regularly with full fuel, a buddy and some
baggage you will definitly want some more
horsepower. Either way the view is just as good!

NSI is someone to be cautious of. Lots of dissatisfied customers with late or
no product, even after putting up deposits. He says he uses bank escrow
services now but I I would still be Leary of Lance Wheeler. He would not give
me direct answers to my questions, like how much his total package really
weighed.

Dave Bangle "Subylyc" in Sandpoint Idaho (subersys@nidlink.com) has a good
package and information for your Subaru questions and answers. Eggenfellar
...? in Connecticut, I believe, has a package for the Rebel as well. He does
the Glaistar subaru's.

Your right there Bruce! I think the only way Lance Wheeler could make his
business reputation any worse (remember the Wheeler Express!?), would be to
bring in Jim Bede as a partner!! The only one's that benefit off either of
these gentlemen is the lawyers that seem to register about 2 corporations a
year for each of them, to stay ahead of the creditors!

It's quite obvious what Wheeler is like to deal with if a guy like Steve,
less than a runway length away from NSI, can't even get parts from them. If
they aren't willing to satisfy people on their own apron, imagine how they
treat anyone over a mile away!

Anybody have any comments about Crossflow? I was going to go with them for
my Super Rebel since they have a complete firewall forward package. Hoping
to get the 320HP turbo'd engine. Can anyone provide info on how to contact
Stratus and this Eggenfellner person for comparison shopping? Or do they
even deal with the high horsepower Suburus?

The Wheeler of Wheeler Express history is Ken Wheeler, not Lance. No
relation that I know of. Ken Wheeler had a great product, and it still
is, but he had, repaeat had, a demo pilot that didn't know not to do
aerobatics with passengers, no chutes, and baggage loose.

A few builders have had problems getting the Crossflow package to work
as well on the aircraft as they do on the dyno. The Marcotte psru is a
must. Avoid their older sprag clutch psru. While the ej33 is an amazing
engine I prefer a more conservative approach rather than tweaking to the
max at 6000 rpm. Crossflow does know how to get the max out of their
engines though.

In this power range there is much to be said for a Chev V-8 or Corvette
LS-1 when things need to be repaired or serviced. Firewall forward
packages can be a problem to maintain. Especially if it has proprietary
technology or electronics in it. You are for sure going to be the
mechanic, so be prepared to learn a lot about your engine and make sure
the parts and information you will need are available.

Egenfelner and Stratus have web sites but I am not aware of them selling
the ej33. Dave at Subie-Lyc might have mentioned doing one though.

Sorry about that Terrance as I didn't mean to deceive, but during a
conversation I had with a gentlemen that is building a Wheeler Express
(Auriga) he lead me to believe that the "Wheeler" of NSI was the same one
that left everyone high and dry for parts on his (and many other) Wheeler
Express. Maybe just an unfortunate scenario that goes along with the last
name Wheeler.

Joys of the internet, slander at the stroke of a key! Will try not to let it
happen again!

NSI is someone to be cautious of. Lots of dissatisfied customers with
late
or
no product, even after putting up deposits. He says he uses bank
escrow
services now but I I would still be Leary of Lance Wheeler. He would
not
give
me direct answers to my questions, like how much his total package
really
weighed.

Dave Bangle "Subylyc" in Sandpoint Idaho (subersys@nidlink.com) has a
good
package and information for your Subaru questions and answers.
Eggenfellar
...? in Connecticut, I believe, has a package for the Rebel as well.
He
does
the Glaistar subaru's.
