Hi Bruce,
This is the other Bruce. Welcome to the Rebel forum. You will find lots of
help and sound advice from this listserver. I find it to be more help than
the tech support at MAM. The guys on the forum say it the way it is, and
speak there minds in the process, and I like that. I suspect MAM has
reservation about pushing this or that for liability reasons... perhaps.
Has any one found, or been using, a spin on oil filter short enough to fit
between the firewall and the 0320 engine? It seems to me this would be
simpler, less cluttered, weigh less and be less expensive than a remote oil
filter. I checked the Champion web page, and they don't make one short
enough. It would need to be no longer than four inches total to allow easy
removal and replacement. I was thinking maybe an auto filter. Is there a
problem with using an auto filter with the Lycoming? would they even fit?

On the RV planes we would cut a hole in the firewall and rivit in a stainless steel bowl to give room for the filtor to be changed.
A friend of mine used to run auto type filtors on his 0-320 but they were an industrial grade, Cant remember the application. Be carefull as the automotive type are thinner and can split open with the pressure and vibration of the lycoming engine.

The B & C oil filter adaptor looks good and I am considering one. The oil
filter spins off from the top and I have to check the clearance to the
MAC speed cowl. B & C has a drawing showing the clearance. On an O-320
using a short champion CH48108, the filter sticks up 1.75 from the top
of the rear accessory case. One aside to this is that if you are running
an electronic tach, the transducer will need to be remotely mounted due
to the tight clearance from the adaptor to the tach drive output. Van's
aircraft has a real nice electronic tach that you can get with a 12"
extention cable and you can mount the transducer on the firewall. Get
the transducer for use with a vacuum pump installed, this gets you the
12" extension cable. About $40.00 tach about $65.00 for transducer.

My O-290 came with a screen. I found that a remote filter set-up used on
off-road VW's works great. I had braided hoses made at a local hydraulics
shop. The filter adapter uses a Ford filter which is very common. Total
cost was less than $75.

Bill I'm using the same set up with it plumbed in line with my oil cooler.
Are you still using the screen as well or did you remove it? I've been told
I should keep the screen in place because there's no oil flow through the
cooler when it's cold. My local AME has lots of used sevicable AN fittings
that he sells cheaper than I can by hydraulic fittings for.

I contacted B&C today after checking out their product on the net (thanks for
the web address). I order the 90 degree accessory for the filter. They are
still $395 plus $50 if you need a spacer. I much prefer this to the remote
type filter for all the reasons you expressed. I think more Rebel or RV
builders would use this set up if they knew of it. Thanks for the tip!

According to B&C the filter sets at the 10 o'clock position so as to not
interfere with the tack cable. The biggest problem is the extra engine mount
brace (on the Rebel) that may require a spacer to move the filter back
another inch or two, depending on need.

B&C stuff. Lightweight starter, oil filter adapter and alternator. I think
(with a little help from some friends) I have convinced myself to keep the O320
in the stock location and not move it back the MAM's suggested 3 inches.
Therefore, the lighter up front the better.
