Fuel & Brake Fittings

Post by Dave Qualley » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:55 pm

I've noticed that all AN fittings use a 37degree flare, rather than a
45* flare.. What's the reason for this?

In a homebuilt would it be acceptable to use 45* fittings? It would
seem that they are more readily available from auto parts stores etc..

My plan is to dump the clear plastic tubing that came with the kit for
the brake lines, and replace it with a nicer looking hose with a SS
braided cover.

Similar plan with the fuel lines.. I don't have a flaring tool, and for
the $$ I can replace the aluminum tubing with flex-hose. Seems to me
that the hose would be a lot easier to route around corners and through
the floor etc..

What's everyone else using? Suppliers?

Fuel & Brake Fittings

Hi Dave,

Regarding 45 degree flare fittings - better check with your inspector first to
see if he will pass those fittings. Usually recommended to stick with aircraft
AN fittings at 37 degrees flare. A aircraft flare tool can be purchased for
$75.00 USD.

As for fuel line - better check with MAM and get their opinion on flex-hose.

Tony Bingelis' books (The Sportplane Builder, Firewall Forward to name a
couple) are excellent reference books to have on hand.

Fuel & Brake Fittings

I checked with Murphy.. On the Amphib Elite and the SR3500, they installed Teflon
hose for the brake and fuel lines.

I priced this same hose from their supplier and it's $6-8/ft for the hose and
$14-16 each for the end fittings.

This brings the cost of the brake and fuel lines up to about $400.

DAVE
On Murphy's display Rebel they have SS brake lines. I used the supplied
Teflon lines. On my fuel system I used AN fittings from my local Hot Rod shop
and 3/8" aluminum tube. Summit Racing, Jegs or any good Hot Rod shop will
usually be a bit cheaper than an Aircraft parts supplier. AN braided lines
aren't cheap ether. Size 4 and up are pretty easy to make up, But size 3 is a
pain in the rear and if not done right will fail under pressure. I said Rebel
but it was probably the Elite. Just remember the more fittings the more
chances of a leak.
