Rebel- solid rivets

Post by Jims170A » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:48 pm

-snip-
Also I would like opinins on (Dont beat me up to bad now) using AN rivits
instead of pop type. The reason is just for looks and the fact that i have
all the tools for
bucking them. I have built 6 RVs and working on a Harmon Rocket now (for
someone else). Would it save $ as AN rivits are real cheep? Could ya use
3/32" instead
of 1/8"? Has anyone built one with an rivits?

Hi Bruce
I used MS20470 4-4 solid rivets in the wing spars and anywhere I would not be
able to see the rivets as I was worried that the might get loose over time. I
would not do It again as don't think it is needed. I did not like the results
of solid rivets as the blind rivets leave the skin smoother then the rivet
gun did. 3/32 could give a smoother skin but I don't think it would give
equal strength as 1/8 blind avex rivets.

Rebel- solid rivets

Thanks Jim for the info, Not sure what the rivit spacing is on the rebel but if one went to 3/32 rivits extra holes would have to be drilled for sure. Also using flush rivits would be nice (more work though). Dimpling also adds shear strenth vs countersinking that takes min. .032 skins anyway.
