I wanted to take a second to pass on a couple of things about the file area
at http://www.dcsol.com:81.
First, the basic database structure was written back when file names still
conformed to 8.3, so I'm sure you've probably noticed that most of the files
so far have been truncated to conform. This is done automatically, but if
you are naming the files for the first time you wont get as strange a
looking file name if you use the 8.3 convention before uploading.
Second, I noticed someone has uploaded a file that is over 500KB. I'm not
complaining, I've got plenty of hard drive space, but that is an extremely
large file for folks that are connected to the net via modem. I think a
good rule of thumb would be to keep the files 100KB or less. Using JPG
format my photos usually come out between 35 - 50KB. One thing to do is
reduce the size. Keeping the image at about 800x600 pixels will not only
make the file smaller, but make it easier to view in your web browser...
It's nice to be able to see the entire image and not have to scroll.
Last, I thought I'd mention a feature in the file area that will make it
easier for you to find files that you haven't already looked at. You can
list files that are "New files for the last # days". Another benefit to
moving to a database format... I have the date uploaded as part of the
record, so you can find files that are new since the last time you were on
rather than looking through all the descriptions to see if there is
something you don't recognize.
I don't know about everyone else, but I sure like have a description to go
along with the photo... keep'em coming.
Mike
