Tuned exhaust

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:47 pm

Rick Ford mentioned he had a stainless tuned exhaust on his aircraft.
Powerflow was the only manufacturer we were aware of and they do not want
to deal with ANY experimentals. Would any of you who know of a source of a
dyno tested tuned exhaust manufactured please let me know who and where.
We will be installing a Lycoming O-360.
Thanks,
Ralph Baker

Tuned exhaust

Post by Rick and Cathy Ford » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:47 pm

Ralph

I bought my exhaust through MAM.
This exhaust was built by:
Aero Speciality
(airplane products)
129 Chuck Yeager Way
Oroville, CA
95965
(916)532-0919

The documentation states that it will fit O-235 to O-60 CARBURATED only.

Tuned Exhaust

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:59 am

I tried to do business with Kevin Murray at Sky Dynamics a couple of years
ago, they were highly recommended by my engine builder Lycon to produce a
good product. Kevin took all the dimensions for my system and after six or
seven months of sliding commitment, said it would be another year before he
could get to my system. I had to cancel my order and find a new system.
Having dealt with Sky Dynamics and with Forsling Aviation (builder of my new
tuned system) John Forsling does what he says he will do, on schedule and at
the quoted cost.
I don't like to bad mouth any business, but I also don't like be strung
along.

Subject: Tuned Exhaust, was Re: Prince prop

Here's another idea: I wonder if any Lyc-Murphy folks have tried tuned
exhaust, such as from www.skydynamics.com. Some chance tuned exhaust
would
get another 10hp out of the engine, so you'd keep your same prop and get
full
power cruise (and better climb rpm too), and potentially even save a
little
gas money.

Honest, I'm not just trying to dream up more ways to spend money. :) I
really don't know if the tuned exhaust makes enf difference to matter.
Or,
novice me, maybe the Lycoming exhaust provided by Murphy is already
considered "tuned". (I saw some possible implication of that from a 2001
post here by Rick Ford.)

Also, maybe this same type of question could be branched off to asking
about
Ellison throttle body carbs.
