The manual for serial number 140 says in part:
"If you are installing the flush mount style fuel cap, note that it is a
non-vented cap. In order to properly vent tanks, allowing for proper fuel
flow, it is necessary to cross vent the tanks, The following drawings
illustrate how to properly cross vent the fuel tanks for your aircraft.
Note: Although not necessary, we strongly recommend cross venting of fuel
tanks when using the standard fuel caps as well."
The drawings show a tee fitting (T-14) at the top of each sight gauge
connected together by 1/4" clear plastic tubing just under the cabin roof.
An additional tee fitting is fitted ~mid span into the connecting tubing.
The same type tubing is run from the leg of this tee through a grommet in
the cabin roof. An aluminum fitting made of 1/4" OD tubing is inserted
into the plastic tubing above the roof. This fitting describes a 90 deg
long sweep bend with the open end of the tubing facing into the slipstream.
I received four fuel caps with my kit. Two are Sea-Dog brand (Everett,
WA), nearly flush (1/4"), stainless, screw-in type with an o-ring seal on
the screw-in portion of the cap. The caps are tethered by a small chain
and there is no provision for venting. There is a slot in the top of the
caps for the application of operating torque. Given that the o-ring sees
rotation under compressive force as the caps are screwed down, I have my
doubts as to the integrity of the seal or the longevity of the o-rings.
The other two are not identified by brand name. The only markings are SPRL.
The mounting flange is red anodized aluminum and are nearly flush (1/8").
The caps are a composite material. There is no provision for venting. The
caps seal via insertion, 1/4 turn to the right and then a cam lever to
compress the o-ring. It appears that the force to operate the cam and
therefore the force on the o-ring is adjustable. They can be operated by
hand without a "twonie" ( whatever the hell that is). IMHO these caps are
clearly superior to the others and stand an excellent chance of keeping the
fuel inside the tanks and the water outside tanks. That's a good thing -
right Bob?

Thanks for the update, RJ !!
I agree completely on your assesment that the red metal caps
will be far better ! These are the same type installed on the
factory S-R that I flew around Ontario, Quebec, and across Canada
last August. They are easy to use & seem to seal very well - I
had no water, ever.
The other ones, with the slot, sound like what we have
installed on Rebel #001 - they've held up for over 10 years now,
but one side tends to let a bit of water in if left sitting for
over 3 months. I don't tighten them too much, as the rubber "O"
ring seems to swell and can be almost impossible to turn !!
Perhaps there's some lube I should use ...
FWIW, <I> would NOT put that vent tube right over the
center of the cockpit - sounds like a good way to get a shower
of gas someday ! I'd be inclined to put one each on the strip
of aluminum fairing at the wing root, instead. Also, more of
a bend, to give an inverted "J" , might keep more water out...
Always "A Good Thing"(tm - by Martha !) ;-)

Mike,
Yes, there is an option for flush caps and I exercised that option. I was
surprised to see both sets of caps show up. If ever I get the box of
aluminum in my garage fashioned into a working airplane, I'll fly up to
Chilliwack and give the extra ones back...
