Elevator cables fall where?

Post by hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:40 pm

I am routing my fuel line right now and need to confirm where the
elevator cables lie. It looks like they will end up on the RIGHT side
of the seat belt bracket (the one between the seats) by about 1-1.5"
distance to the first cable. Can anyone confirm this? I don't have my
floor in, nor have I located the control torque tube yet so I can't be
certain which side of center the elevator cables run.

Elevator cables fall where?

Post by Murphy Technical Departme » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:40 pm

Scott Hi
The control cables are set 1" left of center to clear the seat belt center
brackets. You can confirm this by looking at the control cable horns on your
cc-35 control torque tube.

Elevator cables fall where?

Post by hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:40 pm

Boy, am I confused. I would have bet my eyeteeth that the cables would
end up on the right of the seat belt bracket by 1 to 1.5". Let me
"splain".

1. I think that the control horns should slope aft (they are welded at
an angle). If so, the horns are located 1-7/8" to the right of the
center of the TORQUE tube (without relation to the position of the
torque tube).
2. A photo of someone's plane (found on the Murphy Photo CD under
folders named Disk4 & disk5) show the cables on the right side of the
seat belt horn.
3. Photos of the factory plane (C-FPES) in 1995? show the horns sloped
backward and the cables clearly on the right side going down the rear
floor.

My Rebel is # 300. Grant, is there any way to tell when the change was
made? If there is no easy way to tell, I will take my chances with it
and plan for the cables to run on the right.

Scott,

Like Grant says, confirm this "left of center" with your control column
torque tube. There was some of the serial numbers that came with the horns
welded on to the RIGHT of center. I know because my personal rebel (243R) is
this way.

(Great to see you poke your head in Grant, hope all is well in Chilly-wack!)

Elevator cables fall where?

Post by hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:40 pm

Bob, I am running the fuel lines below the floor. But, I am also
running the elevator cables under the floor and don't want them to
interfere. I will run the fuel down the left side of center and the
cables down the right side of center cuz that's were my torque tube lays
out. I did not realize that the torque tubes had changed until Wayne
mentioned it.

Bob Patterson

Elevator cables fall where?

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:40 pm

Hi Scott !

I hope you are NOT running your fuel line ABOVE the floor !
Besides putting it in a location where it could be damaged by cargo,
etc., this area is used for mounting the hydraulic pump for the
amphib floats. You might end up having to re-route the fuel lines
later....

If you really don't want to put the lines under the floor,
I would think that running them along the sides, under the doors,
about an inch above the floor, would be a safer spot - and it would
be easy to rivet a cover over them. You could use a piece like the
cover over the elevator cables... made out of 1/16" Lexan, if you
wanted to be able to see the lines. Possibly a larger Lexan cover
could include shelter for the rudder cables down the side, as well.

The elevator cables might be left OR right, depending on
the version of torque tube you received. If you don't like where
the horns are located, I'm sure MAM would exchange the tube for
you.

Scott, just to add to things! All 4 (flying) Rebel's I have on site (serial
#'s 086, 105, 155, and 243) have the cables running to the right (starboard)
of the seat belt bracket. (I can't remember which side Bob's #230 or my #
385 and # 386 were on.) If you are running them under the floor will you be
turning the torque tube around, as I suggested before, and running the
cables forward and then around a large pulley before going rearward. If so
then yours will end up on the left side, NO!!!!

Take care,
Wayne
