[rebel-ramble] '10 Ramble status

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

Hi Ron !

Must be the spring sunshine !!

Received the first - and only - registration fee for this year's
Ramble --- TODAY !!!!

It's getting pretty late - we usually have 6 or more signed up
by December in order to make it work... I guess it's still possible,
but not probable - unless there's a lottery win or 2 ! ;-)

Might have to return the fee - suggest that NOBODY send one in
right now -- we can wait. Please email, though, if you want to
fly along, so we know about interest.

Wondering, if there is some interest, maybe, about doing a
smaller, shorter Ramble - maybe back to Quebec City again, or
further East ??? Orrrr .... ??? We're open to suggestions ! ;-) :-)

Will be off to Sun 'n Fun in a couple of weeks - for the big
Murphy Builders Get-together Party ! Several local Rebels are
planning to fly down - IF the weather, and finances, work out !

Will have to decide on Rambling when we get back ....

There's always NEXT YEAR !!!! :-) There will be a few more
Rebels finished & flying by then ....

Thanks, Bob. If the traditional E.W.E. transcontinental route doesn't work
out, perhaps some folks out west would like to fly from Arlington, WA east
to Oshkosh. I'm scrambling to be flying by then -- I hope.

Potential Ramblers, sound off!

[rebel-ramble] '10 Ramble status

There is a bit of a problem with Bob's proposed sched for 2010. It is
set up to allow folks from Ontario time to get back to Ontario, then
drive to OSH for Airventure. This means that westerners who join the
ramble on the eastbound leg get to twiddle their thumbs hanging around
an idle OSH or something for a few days before it starts. Did that in
'07 and while I am hoping to get to OSH this year, it will be eastbound
after the ramblers have already arrived home unless the sched is ammended.

Hi Garry !

We can't win either way, this year !! We aren't likely to get out in
time for Arlington - they are too early, and Oshkosh is late ..... sigh !

You know we are pretty flexible - if the aim was to fly into OSH,
it wouldn't be hard to find a couple of extra stops on the way in
to fill a few days ! ;-)

Don't think we'll be Rambling anyway, with only 1 registrant ! :-(
Won't say no just yet though ... and there's always next year !

[rebel-ramble] '10 Ramble status

Post by Ron Shannon » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

In '07, we got to OSH on the afternoon of our fifth day from Arlington --
with no weather or mechanical delays. If we had started earlier each day and
done a little more flying, we could have made it in four days if we wanted
to. Assuming a similar route (not a given -- we could have fun elsewhere
too) I think those of us on the west coast would still want to leave the
coast seven days before Airventure's opening on July 26, i.e., by July 19,
to provide leeway for weather delay.

The Arlington airshow (http://www.arlingtonflyin.org) ends on July 11, so
for out-of-town people who want to attend that, there's still a one week gap
To the extent that matters, it might be partially filled by a side trip to
my strip west of Arlington and/or a slightly different route, a two night
stop at some nice location along the way, etc.

Apropos Bob's comments, some of us _will_ want to do a West-East Ramble from
the west coast to OSH (via the US for sport pilots) whether there's a full
E.W.E. Ramble, an Ontario Ramble, or neither. As noted above, whether it
syncs perfectly with the Arlington airshow or not shouldn't be a deal
breaker for west coasters. From the west coast on eastward, the schedule
really only depends on how many Canadians (or others far away) really want
to combine Arlington with the Ramble. I'm sure we could work it out either
way.

Talk about rambling... :-)

Well, Ron, and others, am always trying to get people to join us for our
annual trek to the Nimpo Lake Fly-In the weekend after Arlington. It's not
just for floatplanes, and has a nice dirt strip made for the Rebel, and
there is a paved strip at Anahim Lake about 10 miles away. We usually have 3
or 4 Rebel/Elites on that one. And of course, lots of local flying and
things to do around Vancouver the week between Arlington and Nimpo Lake. I
always enjoy sharing some of my favorite flying spots.

Excellent point, Walter, especially for those who may not want to go to
Arlington. As a sport pilot, I can't fly in my favorite foreign country yet,
but perhaps could participate some other way, or just join the formation as
it passes this way after Nimpo -- whatever. Substituting Nimpo Lake for
Arlington would be a nice way to push everything a little later (RE Garry's
concerns) and would be nice for anybody, whether they're coming from the CA
E. coast, the US west coast, or wherever -- beautiful as it is! :-) Of
course, on the way into the US, the gaggle would be welcome to spend a first
night here, of course, if Arlington was already past, or whenever.

The Nimpo Lake Fly-in is July 16 - 18, after Arlington, so no conflict. And
yes, the week before can be filled in with flying around Wa and Vancouver.

Ron, I hope you are aware that US Sport Planes can now be flown into Canada.
However, if you just have the Sport Pilot License, you need to be
accompanied by a PPL passenger.

Here is a link to the Nimpo event.
