[rebel-ramble] Rambler update

Post by Walter Klatt » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

Just got back from my own mini ramble out to Manitoba and back. Made it each
way (1100 miles one way) in one day comfortably. On the way east, had to
dodge t-storms all afternoon through Saskatchewan (hard on the nerves), but
happily, when I got to my destination (Swan River), the sky was clear.

My new engine worked great. I found it to be about .5 to 1 US gph better in
fuel efficiency than my old O-320 when at the same cruise speed. If I run it
at the same fuel flow as the old engine, I did about 5 mph faster. I think
that is mostly due to the electronic ignition. Having a bigger diameter prop
(76) probably helps, too. And I had a much better time maintaining my
desired altitude through the mountains. Before I was pretty much at the
mercy of the winds, and was not exactly keeping to the proper cruise
altitudes.

[rebel-ramble] Rambler update

Post by Walter Klatt » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

I had a 150 hp O-320 before on my Rebel with the 1800 amphibs. My new engine
is a 180 hp O-360 Lyc clone, with the Superior engine, but the new tapered
fin ECI EXP cylinders. These have venturi intakes and are supposed to flow
7% more at full power, so I suspect I am getting more than 180 hp. I have
the Lightspeed Plasma III EI on one side and a Slick mag on the other.

My old prop was a 2 blade 74 X 54 metal Sensenich. It was perfectly matched
for that plane/engine/amphibs combo. My new one is a 76 X 54, same brand,
but is a little too fine pitched. Lots of fun with the take-off and climb,
but it quickly over revs when I lower the nose.

Yes, I would have loved to join everyone there, but Manitoba is only about
half way. Sounds like it was a great time. I made it as far as Ontario a
couple of years ago, when we came down to visit Wayne, but didn't have
enough time this year and I had a homecoming event there that I had to
attend. Plus this high cost of fuel is not the best for my wallet. I also
missed the Nimpo Lake fly-in here, too, which is a great BC event.

Well, Jean, if you make it out west here, would love to shake your hand too.

[rebel-ramble] Rambler update

Post by Walter Klatt » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

Yes, still on floats. It was around 110 mph nearer to sea level when going
to the lake locally, but didn't spend much time there, as I was trying to
break in the new engine. So most of my initial time was spent around 2500
and 120 mph.

On the trip, I always went pretty high, so of course my RPM was much higher
for the same air speed, but I was clipping along pretty fast with ground
speed. Even in headwinds coming back west, I was usually showing over 100
mph on the GPS. Up high (above 8000) I usually ran it around 2550. Fuel flow
was between 7 and 7.5 US gph for most of the trip.

You say you have a 76 X 54 on your O-320. Is that a Sensenich? My old 150 HP
O-320 had a 74 X 54 Sensenich and did 105 mph at 2400 RPM at sea level and
7.5 gph. Best climb solo was 1100 fpm while the new engine will do 1800 fpm.

Walter: Did you make structural modifications to your
Rebel fuselage befor you installed the 180 hp engine?
Also with the larger engine does the aircraft have any yaw
tendance?

[rebel-ramble] Rambler update

Post by Walter Klatt » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:48 am

No, I already had the heavier .032 bottom corners and .025 upper ones, and a
few other mods to strengthen the front fuselage. The fuselage is also cut
back 3 inches.

This O-360 is at most 10 pounds heavier that my old O-320. While the crank
and prop may be heavier, these new ECI cylinders are actually 5 pounds
lighter. And my new cowl is about 5 pounds lighter than the old one. So net
weight difference with the new engine was negligible in my case.

Yes, on my first flight, I noticed I had to use more right rudder on
take-off and climb, but cruise is the same. I also have my vertical fin
offset by .75 inches as per the original instructions, so that probably
helps in my case, too.

So in flight, and on the water, this plane behaves exactly as before except
better performance. The VGs also work better with this engine for water
take-offs.

Please note that I am not advocating using this engine in the Rebel for
normal amphib operations. My old O-320 worked very well. But my flying is
mostly in the mountains, and I like going into smaller high alpine lakes,
where you need more power, but your engine produces far less than its rated
HP.

For normal cruise, I just throttle back and enjoy my better fuel efficiency
as I did on this last trip.

Walter

Walter: Did you make structural modifications to your
Rebel fuselage befor you installed the 180 hp engine?
Also with the larger engine does the aircraft have any yaw
tendance?
