Seasons Greetings!! Hope this finds you all in good health & spirits as I

attempt to get your mind off Xmas and onto something equally as costly but
far more exciting than waiting up to have cake and cookies with Santa.

Horst,Gunnar,Chris @ I have had some interest in making a trip next summer

to Alaska and as it happens have met up with a group over the internet in
the USA who would like us to join up with them in Lethbridge where they will
clear customs. Gunnar Doerwald knows John King the person organizing the US
group as he flew to the east coast and St.Pierre et Miqeulon with him and
three other people in Kitfoxes summer of 2000. Current plans call for the
USA participants to meet at SkyStar in Caldwell,Idaho June 3&4 th" then
leave to clear customs in Lethbridge on the 5 th".

John King would do all the trip detail work from Lethbridge on, our group

would make our own arrangements from here to Lethbridge and back. At this
time we feel like going above the Great Lakes north of Superior.

For anyone interested in this venture and wanting to keep informed about

our progress please let me ,Horst or Chris know.

Hi Phil !

It's unlikely that we can go on this one, but please keep us
posted on progress. I'm sure everone on this list is interested, and
maybe some others will join you !

Please use the Ramble list if you want - there's room here for
2 trips for 2002 !! We hope to have some plans to announce for
Ramble 2002 next month ...

I hope there are SOME MORE Ramblers out there who are ready
for another adventure !!!

The idea of the Rambles is to introduce pilots to the idea of
flying and camping across the country - these fellows have certainly
got the idea !! And they're off and flying .....

we <were> thinking about a small, one-week Ramble Around Ontario ...
BUT - I still have to go to BC for my amphibs, and COPA has a

It was almost one and a half years ago that I first announced the planned
2002 Alaska
Trip. Approximately 22 pilots indicated an interest over that period.
Recently I asked
all pilots to reconfirm their position to establish a more realistic

This is the Un-willing, led by the un-knowing (no reference to you Bob)

who always lead me astray in either un-charted hayfields or un-chartered
islands who has once again been seduced (never been that lucky of course)
to follow wise real pilots to the ends of either that Alaska or that
Ontariario place in my little non-airplane this coming year.

I am now opening up for bidding, my company to either go with the Alaska

group, or fly around that Yontariary place with the GLORIOUS Leader (our own
B Bob of course)

The dis-advantages of having me along in either group FAR outweigh the

advantages, and as such, should anyone be foolish enough to invite me along,
I shall of course join the group which has NOT invited me . Alas, such is
my personality.

Gentlemen:

I am open to the best offer (in reverse of course) as to who will

(and is able) to put up with this miscreant, (ME) for periods up to 4 weeks.
Just think about it!!!!!! During both of my misadventures to the west coast
and east coast, my flying "buddies" ALWAYS sent me ahead by at least half an
hour hoping I d get lost---so far I have fooled them by usually showing up a
half hour after everybody has landed. Just think about it---YOU might be
the lucky one to lose me (the non-pilot in the non-airplane) and once and
for alllllllllll put this myth to rest in the flying community that ultra
light drivers with their non-airplanes are good enough to keep up with all
you REAL pilots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am looking forward to seeing how many real pilots will join Phil Dennis,

Horst P and me to Alaska.

drivers and some tow rope along for this little trip-----Bob Patterson I

Hi Bob. I've been following the development of the trip to Alaska with great
interest, but am not going to be able to participate with my airplane. Have
bought a pair of big ugly Full Lotus floats for it and will get them
installed and flying some time this spring. Doubt if a float plane would be
a very good companion vehicle on the Alaska trip.

I gather from your recent message that you did not make the trip out west
last fall to get the amphibs mounted on your Rebel. If you are looking for
someone to fly with you out to the factory this spring/summer - please keep
me in mind. I'm up to my ears in renovating a retirement home on Picton Bay
as I think I may have told you a while ago and this is the reason for
putting the Magnum on floats, but I'd do my damndest to find the time to
fly out west with you and participate in the installation of your amphibs.
It would be a fun trip and the experience would be very valuable to me as I
have very little float experience at present.

Happy New Year !

The Alaska trip sounds like a real adventure - but we're saving
for 2003, when we hope to have a BIG Ramble, dipping a toe in both
oceans ... Hope they do get SOME Rebel builders to fly along.
Please keep posting to this list, Phil - we're all interested,
even if we can't go !

Not sure when I'll head west - might just change this year's
Ramble ! ;-) Still trying to get the Rebel in for painting,
then we'll work on the amphibs. Will add you to the list of possible
company for the trip. I would likely leave the Rebel there, come
home commercial, and go back for it in a month or 2...

Too bad the Full Lotus's weren't amphibs - then you COULD
go along to Alaska. Your speed would likely still be more than the
Kitfoxes, though....

Like you Horst; I was amazed at the detail in John's 1998 Alaska Trip

Epilog.I gather he will retrace the same territory this time so we have lots
of advanced info on what to look out for.You forwarded it to the Farrell's
and I sent it along to Gunnar Doerwald.If any one else would like to recieve
it let Horst or I know, but I warn you put lots of paper in your printer
since there are some thirty odd pages of interesting reading.

If we meet the USA group in Dawson Creek our tentative itinery for day 5 &

6 could be different since John's been there before and we would be wise to
follow his agenda.

I don't believe we have to file a flight plan from Fort Frances to Piney

Piney Creek even though we overfly the northerly tip of Minnesota .On our
way home from St. Pierre et Micquelon last summer Ray & I flew drt.
Fredricton - Sherbrooke over Maine & New Hampshire without filing.As I
recall at Piney Creek we touch down (depending on winds) in USA and cross
into Canada at the other end of the runway--Just don't run out of fuel or
make an unscheduled stop while overflying. Are things different since Sept.
11? No problem if we have to file we file!

We better follow up with our friends south of the boarder why they carry

guns. Is this for survival reasons in case of a forced landing in the
wilderness or just incase we get onto each others nerves too much?. I have
never travelled in this country or theirs before with any weapons and would
just as soon not on this trip unless there is good reason to do
otherwise.How about some feed back from you on this point John!

Phil,

The Alaska requirements for survival gear includes a firearm and does not

specify the

type. Its purpose is to fend off bears. It takes a powerful rifle to

bring down a 600

pound bear, a pistol or light rifle will only anger him. Canada does not

require one and

does not alloy hand guns and assault rifles. For us in the USA they

require us to pay a

$50.00 fee to bring it in for any reason. Don't know what you Canadians

have to do.

On the 1998 trip I took along a Remmington rifle and there were no Canadian

fees then.

The only time I was questioned/inspected was when I reentered Canada at

Whitehorse on the

return trip. She made sure that the clip was not in the gun. At no time

did I use or

need the rifle. As a result I am not taking one along on this trip. They

are hard to

stash away out of sight in a light two place aircraft. I look at it as

another reason for

someone to break into your airplane.

When we flew in Canada we filed a flight plan for every leg, because we

were told that was

required. Maybe it is different now, but I haven't heard or read anything

to the

contrary. A plan was filed for each flight group. They got very upset

when the aircraft

in each group did not arrive at the destination airport together. We try

to fly in

flights of three aircraft in a group, all of the same cruise range. The

flight groups are

staggered by 5 to 10 minutes apart, with the fastest group departing first

and the slowest

last. All groups are in radio communications with each other.

If any of the Canadian fliers are not all speed compatible, then feel free

to join up with

one of our groups. We all speak the same language, although some of you

guys sound funny,

so that shouldn't be a problem. Four of us Yanks flew with Gunnar in 2000

and we had no

problems. However, when we were flying in Quebec, we kept hearing a lot of

French on the

radio. I never did know what they were saying. Thank God the towers spoke

the King's

English. Oh yes, I married a Canadian, so I am used to the use of "EH" at

the end of all

sentences.

As far as the effects of 9/11, everything is just about back to normal.

Only a few

isolated areas still affected, but nothing we have to worry about. VFR

flight plans are

optional and only required when you intend to land our country after

crossing the

boarder. We are required to file a plan when we enter Canada. In both

cases you must

advise Customs to make sure someone is there on your arrival. So land at

designated Point

Of Entry (POE) airports only. Also be aware of the hours that customs are

on duty.

I do hope you get a few more people to go up to the "REAL"
Alaska, and we'd like to have a big group for the Rebel Ramble
around Ontario this summer, too ....

So - I suggest that you come on BOTH trips !! That would
give you the opportunity to annoy and insult everybody equally -
what could be better ??? !!!! (Sorry, I won't be buying the gas
though ! ;-) )

Just think about it!!!!!! During both of my misadventures to the west coast
and east coast, my flying "buddies" ALWAYS sent me ahead by at least half an
hour hoping I d get lost---so far I have fooled them by usually showing up a
half hour after everybody has landed. Just think about it---YOU might be
the lucky one to lose me (the non-pilot in the non-airplane) and once and
for alllllllllll put this myth to rest in the flying community that ultra
light drivers with their non-airplanes are good enough to keep up with all
you REAL pilots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am looking forward to seeing how many real pilots will join Phil Dennis,

Horst P and me to Alaska.

P S This non-pilot would sure appreciate having a couple of KC135 tanker

drivers and some tow rope along for this little trip-----Bob Patterson I
understand, has graciously offered free fuel to anyone that can make me get
lost.
