Hi Bob (and all you other Ramblers),
Have been reading the Ramble news list with great interest and anticipation
over the past month or so. Lianne and I are still planing to join up with
you as you pass through Winnipeg. As I understand it, and I need your
confirmation, you are planning to spend Monday night, July 10, at Winkler.
Our plan would be to fly over to Winkler (about 30 minutes from Lyncrest) in
the late afternoon. Look for us, we'll be flying a brown and white C-172
C-FPXK. We're almost sure we'll be there, the pane is all tuned up and
ready to go, we have our maps and camping gear all lined up, but we have a
few "details" to work out with two teenagers who will be home alone while
we're gone. If by some chance (I hope not) we don't show up, have a great
trip without us.
How can we find out whether you're on schedule for your arrival at Winkler?
You've mentioned a few times that you will leave updates on you home phone.
How will you be doing that? Will you just be phoning in to change your
voicemail greeting from time to time? What's the number? We'll be checking
starting Saturday but will be most interested in what you have to say on
Monday morning.
How many aircraft are you expecting now? Is there anything you need on this
end? What "events" are planned between here and the rocks, I think I
remember hearing something about Medicine Hat or Okotokes?
See y'all soon!

Waiting in Winnipeg!
Waiting in Winnipeg!
Hi Ramblers !!!
You sound just as excited as everybody here !!! We're not sure of
numbers yet - all kinds of unexpected pilots are joining in at the
last minute (maybe only for a day or 2 ...). We have 64 names on
the list, but I expect somewhere between 10 & 20 aircraft at the
start, with several joining in along the way.
We plan to call our answering machine every day or 2, and
update the message - something like ... "We're in xxxxx on the 15th,
and plan to stop in yyyy tomorrow night" (Can't cram much into a
30 second message ! :-) )
We definitely ARE planning on stopping in Winkler on Mon.
July 10th .... if the weather's good ! ;-) We'll be phoning
them as soon as we're close enough to have an idea ...
The Medicine Hat RAA Chapter have offered to throw us a
breakfast, lunch, or evening BBQ - all we have to do is give them
a little warning !! Have had many invitations - hospitality is
WONDERFUL !! The Vernon Flying Club are also expecting us - we
are looking forward to another marvellous evening BBQ on the shore
of Okanagan Lake - really enjoyed the last one !!!
We also have clubs & chapters planning things for us in
Sandpoint,ID, and Libby, MT - not to mention the Murphy gang in
Chilliwack, as well as all the 'Wet Coast' builders !!!
I understand there might be a few others joining us at
Winkler - we really would like to know how many ... Let us know
if you can.
Only other thing we'd like is to be sure the local newspaper
& TV people know we're coming. We really like to do everything we
can to help the local clubs promote their airports, and recreational
flying in general. One of our Rebel builders has made us a GREAT
sign to hold up in front of the group, with the RAA logo & phone
number, as well as "Rebel Ramble 2000". We're waiting for similar
signs from COPA & EAA ....
We've made up Ramble pins, and Ramble name tags, to give
to everyone who flys along - but it's hard to know how many to
get ..... (and they're hard to find now, and pricey, too !)
Just got back from the airport - test-fitting our new
'instant-up' tent into our <new> Rebel - - it's just TOO awkward !! :-(
Looks like we're back to Plan A - use our trust old 8 x 8 square
dome tent - shouldn't be too bad, with 2 of us ....
Many problems with getting a new airplane just 2 weeks before
the Ramble !! Trying to get some stripes or colour on it, making
gear leg fairings .... etc. .... !!! Nothing like a little
challenge !!! I'm sure everybody else is having lots of fun too ! :-)
Be sure to 'test-pack' the airplane a few days ahead - there
can be some surprises .... (I know Jack's an old hand at this !)
On clothing - figure on it being cooler than you might -
it can be cool at 6,500 or 8,500 ft. (about 3 degrees/1000 ft. lower).
This means a few more long sleeved shirts - you can always roll 'em
up on the ground. I always take a lined jacket, a wool sweater,
and gloves (cloth or leather). I see those smiles - but there's
SNOW on those mountains, even in July !! The idea is to go with
layers of clothing you can peel off or add on, if needed. One
Ramble saw 9 degrees in the tent - in July !!! That was when the
compact "space blanket" came in handy - always carry one !!
We're all looking forward to getting together at Brampton
on Friday, July 7th, for the Ramble Kick-Off Party (whatever it may
turn out to be !) :-) Stay tuned to 122.75 as we get closer !!!
See you soon !!
