Flying over to Vancouver Island isn't all that difficult.. It's just not as free and
easy the rest of the trip.. My parents live in Duncan(1/2 way between the Nanaimo and
Victoria airports).. I've made the crossing MANY times.. I'll admit it's been a couple
months since I've been.. But there are several ways to get across the pond..

South of Vancouver Interational there are two VFR routes to the Island.. Point Roberts
or White Rock to East Point, then on to your destination...

1. Call up Vancouver Terminal once you are in the air and near either Pt. Roberts or
White Rock, and take your chances... I've never been denied access yet, but I have heard
of people who have been.. I think it has a lot to do with how "professional" your
initial callup is.. If they see that you are where you say you are, know where you're
going, etc.. They will let you in.. Depending on how busy the controllers are, you can
request an alternate route direct to your destination, I've only had to fly all the way
to East point once.

2. When you file a flight plan with FSS they will give you a transponder code. If you
don't file a flight plan you can call 1-800-YVR-CODE, tell them your point of departure,
requested routing, and destination, they will give you a transponder code.

3. The easiest way to go.. Fly around to the North of Vancouver.. Fly through the
Vancouver Harbour at 2000', the controllers there are very helpful if you want to circle
the downtown core for photos. Continue out over Bowen Island, you can begin a climb
here, not above 3200.. Once past Gower Point continue climbing to 4500 for the
crossing.. About the time you get over the Sechelt airport you can make your turn out
over the water and cross.. Watch the restricted area, FSS can tell you if it's active.

With a little planning you CAN fly to/from the Island without having to contact any
towers, avoiding the Class 'C' airspace, and keeping some semblence of gliding distance
to land.

If you don't mind following a set route, and talking with the Terminal Controllers, the
trip from Chilliwack-Vanc.Harbour-Nanaimo-Victoria-White Rock-Chilliwack is a spectacular
one!!

If you(or anyone else) have a fax..

I have a Notice from Nav Canada about the "VFR over-water flight procedures" that I
mentioned.. It is a little dated (May 25/98), but as far as I know the information is
still the same..

I'll pick up a new VTA for Vancouver this week(I've been meaning to do it for a while
now).. And I'll check with some people who I know that make the crossing regularly to
see what it's been like lately..

If anyone has a seat available I would be more than happy to co-pilot on a trip to the
Island, or anywhere around the Vancouver area.. For those who don't know me: I'm
about 2/3 complete on a Super Rebel, and I live about a 1 hour drive(30 minute flight) to
the West of Chilliwack in Port Coquitlam. I am quite familiar with all the airports in
the area.. I plan to join the group in Chilliwack for any and all events! (Bob: Are we
camping at YCW? Or hotelling?)

to "Cicely, Alaska" .....

There are several route options after "Cicely" and Sandpoint &
Libby - we might even come back to the 'Wack ! One leading possibility
is heading north to Creston, and going East through Crows Nest Pass -
just to see another part of "The Rocks" ...

This would leave the others to re-trace the route out through
Vernon, Revelstoke, Golden, to Okotoks .... Shouldn't be TOO difficult,
having just come that way. But you never know <WHERE> we might end up
- that's the fun part of Rambling !! :-)

I've made note to myself to make some copies of the info to bring along to YCW..

For the northern crossing route.. Take a look a little further North, there are a couple
islands that might make your glide distance a little more comfortable.. Texada Island
and Lasqueti Island. According the the VTA this is getting into the Comox MTCA, but it
mentions nothing about the altitudes etc, dunno how high you can fly there before you
have to call someone... The downside with much of the coastal waters is that most of the
beaches are very rocky, and the rest of the land is 98% covered in trees. Not a lot of
suitable landing spots in emergencies.. A lot of people here have the theory of spotting
all the boats you can, then if you have to ditch, do it beside a ferry or some other
boat..

If people are interested, and want to take the time.. Tofino is a great place to fly
to.. It's about 2 hours flying from Chilliwack(my guess).. Go due West from Vancouver to
the West Coast of the Island, if you miss it, the next stop is Japan. I flew there the
week after I earned my Private licence, I had told myself all through training that
Tofino would be my first "long" cross country trip.. The airport there is quite
interesting. Look it up in the Flight Supplement, CYAZ.. Three 5000' Concrete runways
in the middle of nowhere. It's an Ex. military field..
It's also a short walk to the beach from the airport. This is as West Coast as it
gets! I understand that there is a beach a little ways up the coast from Tofino where
the sand is hard enough that planes regularly land on the beach at low tide. If you
have floats there is a Hotsprings neaby..

All this talk of flying today..I'm getting the itch. I'm going to have to go rent a
plane one evening this week!

looks like about 20 miles of water at 4,400 ft. .... beyond MY glide
ratio .... Geeeezzzz !! I HATE these stupid airspace restrictions
that hurt SAFETY - just so those big, commercial, money-grubbing aircraft
won't have to look out for us TAXPAYERS !!! If I had MY druthers, I'd
just climb on up to 10,000 or so .... :-)

It's very likely that someone will take you up on the offer of
co-piloting them around the area !!

Hey Bob! Not sure if this is on your list. Seeing your message reminded me of
Piney/Pine Creek Manitoba - the place dad and I cleared customs last western Ramble. We
landed about 10 miles south, called the Canada customs guy and told him where we were and
that we'd be there in an hour (minimum one hour notice). He asked why that long, given
how close we were. We noted the one hour minimum notice. He told us to get our a**es on
up there asap, since he was just brewing a fresh pot of coffee and was baking bread while
playing cards with the US customs guy. The strip straddles the border, and as long as
you land south to north, it meets the criteria for not being necessary to file a flight
plan <g>. However, I almost passed out from lack of blood after making the 30 second
dash from plane to building in the middle of their mosquito season!

Don't worry - Piney is DEFINITELY on the route !! It's so nice
to be able to cross the border WITHOUT filing a flight plan ! :-)

I've also found at least one OTHER place where we can do this,
in Alberta - <IF> we decide to go through Glacier Park !! (Pretty -
and pretty scary !!)

We're hoping you can at least fly over to Brampton for the
Friday July 7th Ramble Kick-Off Party - and maybe on to Manistique
& Ashland over the weekend ...

This would leave the others to re-trace the route out through
Vernon, Revelstoke, Golden, to Okotoks .... Shouldn't be TOO difficult,
having just come that way. But you never know <WHERE> we might end up

Vancouver Harbour at 2000', the controllers there are very helpful if you

want to circle

the downtown core for photos. Continue out over Bowen Island, you can

begin a climb

here, not above 3200.. Once past Gower Point continue climbing to 4500

for the

crossing.. About the time you get over the Sechelt airport you can make

your turn out

over the water and cross.. Watch the restricted area, FSS can tell you if

it's active.

With a little planning you CAN fly to/from the Island without having to

contact any

towers, avoiding the Class 'C' airspace, and keeping some semblence of

gliding distance

to land.

If you don't mind following a set route, and talking with the Terminal

Controllers, the

trip from Chilliwack-Vanc.Harbour-Nanaimo-Victoria-White Rock-Chilliwack is

a spectacular

one!!

Thanks, Dave ! I suspect most would prefer to pick up the latest
info when we get there .... space is at a premium, both in the airplane,
and in the mind. :-)

Suspect we will 'motel' in Chilliwack, but some might want to
camp for a day or 2 .... (presume we can still do that on the field ..)

Looking at the new VTA, it looks like you have to go up to Gibsons
airport before crossing, to avoid a chunk of lower airspace. This still
looks like about 20 miles of water at 4,400 ft. .... beyond MY glide
ratio .... Geeeezzzz !! I HATE these stupid airspace restrictions
that hurt SAFETY - just so those big, commercial, money-grubbing aircraft
won't have to look out for us TAXPAYERS !!! If I had MY druthers, I'd
just climb on up to 10,000 or so .... :-)

It's very likely that someone will take you up on the offer of
co-piloting them around the area !!

how close we were. We noted the one hour minimum notice. He told us to

get our a**es on

up there asap, since he was just brewing a fresh pot of coffee and was

baking bread while

playing cards with the US customs guy. The strip straddles the border, and

as long as

you land south to north, it meets the criteria for not being necessary to

file a flight

plan <g>. However, I almost passed out from lack of blood after making the

30 second

dash from plane to building in the middle of their mosquito season!

to say where we are, and where we'll be next .... it would help if

I was hoping we could get some photos on the Murphy web site
when we get to BC, but it looks like Dave Walker will be away on vacation,
so that might not happen until after Oshkosh !! By then, I'll likely
be on a sales tour of Quebec in the Super Rebel :-)

Could possibly phone someone - or several different people -
along the way, if they were willing to post something ...

Gosh, I'm soooo jealous!!!

I wish I could be coming along, but my assignment to cover the Northwest EAA
Regional Fly-In in Arlington for the EAA pubs blew any chance of tagging
along for a while. Then I have to come back and finish the August issue of
EXPERIMENTER and get the September issue well on its way before Convention -
unless, of course, you folks wouldn't mind missing an issue. Then, maybe, I
could come along!?!?!

Here's wishing you blue skies and tailwinds throughout the trip ... and,
don't forget to take pictures and keep some notes so we can get together at
Oshkosh and share some stories for a possible article in SPORT AVIATION. If

Hey - we wouldn't mind missing an issue if we could have the
pleasure of your company !!

Of course, the OTHER 4 bajillion EAA members <might> get a
bit grumpy .... :-( (probably just jealous !)

Just bought 10 rolls of film - should last us to Chilliwack,
at least. Of course, MY photos lack <something> (like SKILL :-) )

I wish I could be coming along, but my assignment to cover the Northwest EAA
Regional Fly-In in Arlington for the EAA pubs blew any chance of tagging
along for a while. Then I have to come back and finish the August issue of
EXPERIMENTER and get the September issue well on its way before Convention -
unless, of course, you folks wouldn't mind missing an issue. Then, maybe, I
could come along!?!?!

Here's wishing you blue skies and tailwinds throughout the trip ... and,

We tried to take a laptop along 4 years ago - ran out of room !!
Nothing less to take with us, so looks like same status ! :-(

We <DO> call the answering machine here, and leave messages
to say where we are, and where we'll be next .... it would help if
someone would call in & post this to the list.

I was hoping we could get some photos on the Murphy web site
when we get to BC, but it looks like Dave Walker will be away on vacation,
so that might not happen until after Oshkosh !! By then, I'll likely
be on a sales tour of Quebec in the Super Rebel :-)

Could possibly phone someone - or several different people -
along the way, if they were willing to post something ...

Things often get busy Rambling, what with tent pitching,
beer drinking, and the distance to phones :-) :-) so we don't
always check in ...

One day, I'd like to do this trip with a digital camcorder,
and a wireless link - then we could update several times a day !!!
(Just have to win a lottery first .... ;-) )

Hi Ramblers !!

I received my map package this morning !!

One disappointment, though - Regina is backordered. I called VIP,
and they just don't know WHEN they will be in !!!

'Nav-Scam' recently took over distribution of all aviation
maps in Canada - there are several fiascos already .... Even THEY
can't tell us when we might get Regina !! We're hopeful that it will
be before we go - but, as one resourceful Rambler has already done,
you might want to call CAA and get auto maps of Saskatchewan & Alberta -
might as well get something out of that membership ! ;-) :-)

For all of you Ramblers who flew on Ramble 2000 - a couple of
tips IF YOU STILL HAVE THE OLD MAPS ! Hang onto Regina, just in case !!
The other tip is : you can delete the WAC E-15 from the order - I
discovered that it hasn't been updated since 1998 !!!
So the old maps are still good !! (Really, except for
airport & airspace info, the old ones are still useful - they haven't
moved any lakes or mountains for a loooong time ! ;-) ) You might
want to bury them somewhere inaccessable for the U.S. though - don't
want that $200 fine !
