Hello,
The talk about .6 deg incidence in the horizontal stabs has me
looking at changing to that. My manual is vague as to how many bolts are
required to attach the horizintal stabs but I assumed that it was only
one (1) AN4 bolt. It is installed about 2 3/4" from the edge of the
fuse at the bulkhead. There is another small hole in the front stab
attach bracket but it is so close to the edge of the fuse that it is
impossible to get a bolt and/or nut plate in there. Does anyone know for
sure if the inboard one is all that is required?

Rick, It better be the only one required, or a lot of stabs would have blown
off by now, as that is how most are mounted (although the one I have in the
shop right now was done by the original builder with two on each). The
original MAM idea was only one bolt with a plastic washer between the
bulkhead and the attach fitting, so you could slightly loosen the bolts,
undo the lift strut lower bolt and fold (swing up) the feathers so it would
go through a garage door.

Wayne and Rick,
Wayne, you may want to remove the outboard bolt on the fwd. stab that the builder added.
I told Darrell Murphy that I did just that and he gave me a lesson on stress. What you do when you add the second bolt, is turn the stab into a cantilevered stab. Darrell stated that if you load the stab to much it will break just outside of the spar attachment fitting. As the loads will not be transmitted to the other two attachments. ( strut and aft attached fitting ).

Like I said it <was> the previous builder that mounted the front stab fittings with 2 bolts each and he is a Professional Aeronautical Engineer. Removing the outboard bolts will be the most minor thing I will have done on this Rebel, to correct questionable steps outside the manual. I have reconstructed MANY "improved" engineering changes back to the way Darryl wanted it built in the first place, so that nobody becomes a test pilot with this one when it's refurbishment is complete!
If Darryl doesn't want people putting 2 bolts in these front stab fittings (and I'm sure there are probably lots flying that have them mounted this way!), he should remove the extra tooling? hole that is on the fitting. The hole just begs to be drilled and bolted, as everyone wonders why it is there in the first place! Other necessary steps to complete the aircraft have been "missed" in the manual, so when someone sees a predrilled "pilot" hole, they presume it is needed, drill it, etc and just figure it was forgot about in the manual.
