[rebel-builders] Full Lotus Mounting Arrangement

Post by Steve & Tammy Ploughman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:34 pm

Hi Derek,

Just got the price from Full Lotus and it is $8796.00. I guess that is the
same as what you were quoted. Apparently, we must buy 2 sets of floats a
year to meet our dealer quota and we haven't done that this past year. As
for the mounting gear, I would estimate a cost of $2700.00 for everything.
One thing I did not include were those brackets that Tom makes up. I figured
he would probably get the job to do that. This includes everything to just
bolt on the floats and go flying.

All the best,
Steve

Hi I'm looking for input as to the EDGE Float Mounting arrangement Full
Lotus now have.
I'm building a Spring Gear Rebel R-449 and have not seen a Rebel mounted
by this method.
They use the existing aircraft landing gear, clamping to the axles and
only one rear strut per side, no diagonal struts or flying wires.
Anyone out there with experience or comments on this arrangement?

[rebel-builders] Full Lotus Mounting Arrangement

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:34 pm

Two things.... well maybe three or four.

The rear attach fitting on the Rebel is not designed to take the main
landing load when on floats and the diagonal strut is required to transfer
said load up into the main fuselage cage at the main gear attach area.

The diagonal strut is also required to give the float to aircraft mounting
the ability to be rigid enough to handle when the floats "stick" and the
airplane momentum wants to continue forward..... and if you go thru the Full
Lotus gallery you'll see many of the aircraft have had a diagonal strut/tube
added to get some rigidity. Think of it as trying to keep two walls and a
roof standing without an end wall to brace it.

Even with the existing forward "Beaver" style V mounting that the 2150's I
recently sold had (that came off a flying Rebel), I supplied the buyer with
another length of strut to make another diagonal from the rear float attach
area to the front fus attach area. I suggested this to him, as with the flex
of the Full Lotus (depending on those 2" tubes for stiffness) it was of my
opinion that too much was being expected of the rear strut attach on the
aircraft.

Mounting the floats directly to the existing gear legs/axles will have you
mounted low and narrow IMHO and a few too many landings in waves will see
you collapsing forward at some point in time without a diagonal strut.

Regards,
Wayne O'Shea

[rebel-builders] Full Lotus Mounting Arrangement

Steve,

The price you gave below, does that include the 3 spreaders
bars, water rudders, all cables/flying wires, pulleys, bolts,
turnbuckles, steps etc. to bolt to the fuselage mounts and I would just
have to supply the floats with the stiffener tubes and Tom brackets? Is
that estimate firm?

I'm still drilling holes. Having difficulty with firewall to cage
section. I've shortened the floor pan and side pieces by 3 inches per
the manual for an O-320 but am finding it hard to get the side pieces to
align with the cage up rights and have to raise the firewall about an
inch higher than the 1994 manual I have calls for. Any suggestions?

Derek
