[rebel-builders] Tail wheel for Super Rebel or Murphy Yukon

I built one for my rebel and am very pleased with it. You can get plans
from Bob Barrows ( the bearhawk designer ) for $25 and modify it to suit
your needs.

I did not get the Outback Tail kit, that I purchased from Murphy Aircraft in July 2007 for $563.00, so need to find a suitable replacement. I have researched the following providers which are more money, also because some are for certified aircraft.
XP Modification 500 X 5 for $1700.00
Alaskan Bushwheel ABI-3200 4 X 8" $1025.00
ABI-3400 $1550.00
Scott 3400 similar to above
Alaska Tundra 4X4 $750

Now the Iron Design seems to be a reasonably priced option at $656.00

My stinger is 1" in diameter and the mounting is the same as the Super Rebel, and maybe the Moose.
The Iron Design stinger mount is 3/4" diameter. I could get the 3" at the wheel mount end machined down to 3/4". The angle that the rod stinger goes into the tail wheel is normally manufactured at 15 degrees. Then the king pin should be vertical or slightly toe ahead at full gross weight.

Does anyone have experience with this tailwheel?
Any one know what the angle is on the Murphy designed tail wheels?
Advice is most appreciated, better alternatives or do you think this will work?

[rebel-builders] Tail wheel for Super Rebel or Murphy Yukon

Post by snowyriver » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:55 pm

I have the 8" version on my rebel, it uses a flat spring. Very limited
time (4.4 hrs!!) but so far it works well with no noticed shimmy. I do
have 2 addn'l hrs taxiing with it and found that I like the handling
better with a slight slack in the chains. Craig

Reid,

I have a heavy duty tail wheel that's never been used ... only problem is
that it's in my shop in Idaho, and I won't be back there for a few weeks.
If you haven't found a solution by then, shoot me an email ...
robert@montanasky.us ... I'll send you a picture of it, and we'll work out a
price that works for both of us.

Cheers, Bob 612e

[rebel-builders] Tail wheel for Super Rebel or Murphy Yukon

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:55 pm

Reid,

I have the 3450 AK Bushwheel and really like it.

You have one more issue to think about though. The swivel-stinger mount
bolts on the Murphy installation are (IIRC) 1 3/16" center-to-center whereas
every other manufacturer that I know of (e.g. Scott, AK Bushwheel, etc) use
1 1/4" center-to-center holes. Hence if your stinger already has holes
drilled you'll have to fill them (weld?) or add bushings or (?) and redrill
them.

Ted

Thanks Ted,

Do you know what the normal angle for the stinger to the horizontal of the tail wheel bearing?

[rebel-builders] Tail wheel for Super Rebel or Murphy Yukon

Post by rhuzzey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:55 pm

Hi Drew

I have already made too many parts in my mind unneccesarily.
I only have a band saw and drill press, so not up to anything to complex.

Thanks
Reid

[rebel-builders] Tail wheel for Super Rebel or Murphy Yukon

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:55 pm

Reid,

I'm not sure what "normal" is as such depends on tire sizes, but I believe
most folks might have the stinger mounted in the 2nd hole up from the
bottom. Start there and evaluate the angle of your swivel bolt.
