Ohkosh tips & tricks

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:54 pm

What I've learned at several Oshkosh events...

. Bring your own towel and soap and flip-flops (to wear in shower)

. Take your shower late afternoon or early evening--there's never a
line then and the showers are much cleaner than during the morning "rush
hour"

. There is a "charging station to plug in your phone, laptop,
whatever by the showers

. Grab an "AirVenture Today" free newspaper first thing in the a.m.
(free in newspaper kiosks all over)--read it over coffee and find out stuff
you might not have known about (all AirVenture news covering all sorts of
topics from previous day and highlighting things for current day

. Bring sunscreen and a good sun hat

. Bring your own water as you walk around--vendors charge $3+ for
bottled water. There are fountains at a few places to refill your water
bottle

. The absolutely BEST breakfast hands-down no doubt about it is the
one by the Ultralight field (at far S end of field) put on by the Vintage
Aircraft folks. You get stuffed for like $7 whereas other vendors/groups
charge close to that for far, far less food

. If you want to ask a specific vendor questions, they are way less
busy during the daily afternoon airshow

. There are some good deals to be had at the "Fly-Mart" but you have
to know a good price from a bad price--some vendors actually have higher
prices there than on their websites!

. You have to buy beer before 8:15 p.m. at local stores...some
stupid Oshkosh city law prohibits liquor store (grocery store) beer sales
after that insane hour!

. There is nowhere to purchase beer that I'm aware of on the Oshkosh
grounds

. There is always good beer at my Moose!

. If you like (have to have <g>) good coffee, bring your own stove,
French Press and gourmet coffee and make your own. There's free coffee each
morning by the ice kiosk at the S end of Homebuilt Camping but it isn't the
greatest (though "free" helps it taste better)--coffee runs out fast though

. If you're camping in Homebuilt Camping, there is always a free
shuttle cart (several of them actually) driving around that you can flag
down. Put a couple of bucks in the tip jar on your first (and all) rides
and they will look for you. Get their phone # (it's a central paging
#)...you can call them from anywhere on the field and they will come pick
you up and bring you back to Homebuilt Camping (or to wherever)

. There is ice (nominal charge) at the S end of the Homebuilt
Camping area

. If you're flying anywhere even remotely close to Yankton,
SD...KYKN...they are an OUTSTANDING place to get a free lunch, great 100LL
price and simply the best hospitality I've ever experienced at any FBO in
the country!

If I think of any more tidbits I'll post them.

Ted
