This question is for Wayne O. or anyone else who knows,
Some time ago you had mentioned that you recommend the Scotts
tension spring system for the Scott tailwheel. I have looked into this
and there are two different size springs available. The lightweight
spring kit has 3/4 " diameter x 3 1/2" long springs. The heavy duty has
1 5/8" dia. x 4 1/2" long springs. I suspect that the lightweight ones
are the ones that should be used for the Rebel. Please advise.

Rick, I didn't realize that there was two choices for tension springs for
the Scott 3200. I always just order the spring kit for the 3200 and it comes
with the larger diameter springs. The 3/4 dia may work fine also, although
the heavier springs will help you make smaller rudder movements while the
tail is still on the ground, due to the extra pedal pressure required to
move the rudder. I have not seen any adverse lower rudder hinge wear due to
the heavier tension spring (yet).

What can happen when using the other "screen door closer" compression
springs is, after turning one way and then the other on soft ground (like
when you do the 180* turn at the end of a strip and overshoot it and then
have to turn back to line up for take off), the spring can bottom when
stretched to it's limit and bend or break the tail wheel arm off. This will
happen when the tail wheel is turned one way and held by soft ground and
then when you apply the other rudder pedal to straighten out the A/C the
springs will bottom out and then bend, crack or break the arm off one side
of the tail wheel assembly.

Wayne and all,
Thanks for the info on the tailwheel springs. Is that tailwheel assy held on with a
1/2" bolt? The hole in the casting is .500". It looks like I will be swapping out the
Murphy aluminum tailwheel spring for some sort of steel leaf as has been mentioned in the
past (low priority right now). The Murphy spring is bent such that the spring is bent
down at an approximatly 60 deg angle. I read somewhere in previous messages that the
swivel plane of the tailwheel assembly should be parallel to the ground when the airplane
is sitting on the tailwheel. That make sense, but I will check out some taildraggers at
the airport to see how the geometry is laid out. Am now installing the elevators and the
controls. We need some sunshine to melt this snow and I can get on to mounting the wings.
I am resolving for flight this year and it looks good at this point. Maybe Oshkosh!

Yes, it is designed for an AN8 (1/2") bolt. I have seen lots of J3's, etc,
using a Scott 3200 tail wheel with a 1/16th inch walled reducer sleeve to
allow the use of a 3/8" bolt instead though!

Swivel plane should be level or slightly "trailing" when sitting 3 point.
Definitely asking for trouble if you have it tipped forward ANY degree.

Going to remove MAM tailwheel and spring?? for maybe Scott 3200.
Has anybody used the Matco pneumatic 8" tailwheel,if so what's it like.
Scott 3200 is expensive ,to Matco but is it that much better,
Would appreciate some info on this.

Also 595R 1997 model has MH6B gold rims with 8.00.6 tyres.
MTOW will be around 1200 LBS .
Have seen this discussed some time ago,cant recall what the outcome was.
Like to know if they will be OK ??.

Fired up the Rotec Radial last weekend ,sounds and looks awsome.
Should be flying by Xmas with a bit of luck .

Yes it is the Ultralight Rebel
Will look at ebay for scott t/wheel
Will consider changes to original MAM wheel.

A new scott 3200 as of today is $US 2800 %*?^!(><+(*& at ACS.
