Hi Everyone!

One day I should take Bob P's (and my own advise) and just build these
things "as is" and get them flying. Added about 6 hours of work to the
Elevator while finishing up the 3500 mods and final closing of same.

I couldn't stand the look of the elevator's outboard ends, with the 4
tooling holes and the rib flange cut outs at the main spar, so I fabricated
.020 covers for each end and moved the .032 tip weight reinforcing doublers
to the inside of the tip. The tip weight doublers pick up the rivets of the
outside cover around the perimeter of the weights. I also moved the inboard
tip weight doubler to the inside of the rib in the same fashion (riveted
around the perimeter) for a much cleaner look and to leave me some more
clearance between the tip and the stabilizer.

I also fabricated a fairing for the trim servo rod slot. Really cleans up
the looks of the area and also reinforces the area around the slot (that has
to be cut out for the rod to come through).

Hi Wayne,
Elevator and trim rod fairing looks good. The trim rod fairing looks to be
about the same size as what could be use for the rudder cables. If you
decide to make a production run on trim fairings, let me know.

Wayne, Elevator tips look nice. By comparing your pictures with my elevator
it looks like they did move the trim servo back so the shaft clears the
spar.

Thanks Al!

As a matter of fact I did hold it up to the fuselage before I riveted it to
the elevator and thought it might work fine for the rudder cables. Don't
know as I don't have the slot cut out for them yet. Probably will need to be
a little wider on the exit to allow for a bit of cable "flap" on landings.

Don't have any real plans for mass producing the things and they are quite
easy to make. All I do is measure the height I need to clear the cable/rod
at the mouth end about an inch beyond the slot, the length of the slot (plus
the inch) plus about 5/8" for the end flange and the width of the area to
cover. I then put this on cardboard. The closed end is just the width of the
slot area + about 5/8" on each side for flanges. The other end is laid out
from the center line with the measured height plus about 1/2" each side of
center and the 5/8" for flanges (of course if you want a larger width exit
area you will need to add more than 1/2"). Cut it out and try the cardboard,
play with the size until you get something that works nice. Transfer to .016
or .020. Hand press the aluminum, down the centerline, over a 1/2 to 5/8"
rod (I use the reinforcing rod the braces my 8' brake). Then brake the 5/8
flanges a little at a time until you get a proper fit and you may have to
squash the closed end in the brake or hammer and dolly to get it just right.

Thanks Scott! I figure MAM probably caught the servo interference when they
first upgraded to the -8A servo and made adjustments for it in future kits.
Just thought I would throw it out for anyone else that is working on an
older kit and will/has come up against this. Hopefully nobody put one
together without checking full travel, after the servo was in place. The
clearance hole required (on mine anyhow) is not a big deal, as it is on the
compression side of the center axis of the spar for normal +G operations.

Hi Wayne,

Hope you are well. I was perusing any discussions around elevator trim push-
rod fairings and came across your description below. Tried to find the photos
you are referring to, but perhaps they were lost in one of Mike's server
glitches or transfers...I recognize it might be hard to keep track of photos
uploaded about nine years ago!!

Any chance you might still have them somewhere? Do they look anything like
the ones I made for the rudder cables exit holes:

While fairings are not my favorite things to fabricate, this particular fairing
would be more to would help limit dust and debris in the trim servo
compartment than for aesthetic/aerodynamic reasons; I'm thinking anytime
you'd apply power while on the ground, stuff will get kicked up around the
elevator.

Anyone else found anything off-the-shelf that works?
