Flying them?

I have been speaking with Wayne O'Shea (ok annoying
with a ton of questions) about rebels for a few months
now. I have my eye on one he is currently
refurbishing. It has a 118hp engine and on wheels.

If someone could sum up the flying characteristics,
what would it be? I do not have any tail dragger time,
I have Husky's and Piper Super Cubs available to get
my tail wheel sign off, would there be a transition
issue?

Hi Travis !

You will be fine if you get training on the Super Cub. The
Rebel is easier to land than almost any taildragger, because of the
wide gear stance. Handling in flight is nicer than the Cub, and
you'll have a LOT more room. The visibility over the nose is also
better than the Cub, but the extra width does restrict you slightly
when trying to peer down the far right side. Control response and
roll rate are generally better than the Cub, too.

You should ask Brian Cross - he flew the Super Cub extensively
after getting his licence, then moved directly to the Rebel.

An aside - if Wayne <does> manage to bring that particular Rebel
to market for $60,000, it will be the best bargain in the last few
years !! The last 2 recently-finished Rebels with O-235's, on wheels,
in Ontario, went for $63,000 and $65,000 .... (and, with an O-320,
for $75,000 !)

You will REALLY love flying the Rebel !! (Of course, I <AM>
just a weee bit prejudiced !! ;-) )

Hi Warren !

NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !! It's just like a big Rebel !! Not quite
as nimble or sensitive on the controls - it IS <MUCH> bigger, but
really VERY well behaved.

You checkout plan sounds great - I'd LOVE to try the SU29 !!

Landings take a bit of getting used to - it was hard to get
a full stall with the prototype, but the taller gear now supplied
solved that. My biggest problem was judging the height for roundout
- most always was about 6" too high !! ;-( Not hard landings,
just not as many 'greasers' as I'd like ! I guess I'd improve
IF they let me fly the Super every day for a year or two ;-) !!
(hint, hint !) (Well, I can hope, can't I ??? )
