[rebel-builders] elevator trim spar

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

It's a recommendation for the outboard rib only on the rebel. If you
don't want to drill out enough rivets to do it I'd suggest it would be
reasonable to just fit .032 triangular doublers top and bottom and call
it better than most rebels.

Hi everyone,

Manual says we are supposed to add 'clips' to connect the trim ribs to the
trim spar. Do they mean all 4 of them, or just the outside ones? This
procedure is a bit of a pain for me, as this part was partially completed by
the previous builder and the spar, skins, and ribs have already been drilled.

Not a lot of room in there.....trying to fit (hold) a 'clip' under a folded skin and
3/4" spar, and then drill through the clip and the rib! Argh!

Looking for a bright idea....or some sympathy! :)

Oops Sorry Rob I thought you meant elevator ribs. I don't remember where
I put the angle "clips" on the trim tab.

[rebel-builders] elevator trim spar

Rob

I'm going to go out on a limb here but I'm guessing what they have in
mind is something like you see we did on our Elite to tie in the spar
which the trim tab hinge is riveted to on the elevator. In the original
design the only thing that was supporting the trim hinge spar in the
elevator was the skin. We added right angle clips between the ends of
the spar and the adjacent (full length) ribs on either end of the spar,
that way the internal framework supports the spar not the skin.

See: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~daricker/Ima ... m_Pems.JPG

That image is on my web site; elite583.cjb.net, click to the elevator page.

As a caution, anything which raises your structural suspicion should be
looked at VERY thoroughly. Examples are this reinforcement and things
like fatigue cracking in the rear spar at the aileron mount at the wing
tip of the SR/M (and Elite and Rebel???) and the rear spar at the
outboard stabilizer hinge mount on both the SR and Elite. These days
these things are not forefront in MAM's attention and as the fleet
accumulates hours it's up to the owners diligence and communication
within this group to ensure the safety of our aircraft. Do not blindly
assume that the design is perfect because someone else designed and sold
you a kit.

Down off of the soap box......

Cheers,

Dave
