[rebel-builders] M-14 carb heat

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

I do not currently have carb heat on my M-14. I've flown in all
temps/weather for 450+ hours w/o carb heat on an M-14--not bragging--just
haven't had it. I'd like to add carb heat...but I too am looking for an
easy to copy template/idea. Supposedly a pressure carb as the M-14 has
isn't susceptible to icing, but I've had a few incidents where I wondered.

Jason (and others),

I'm putting a Dynon Skyview system in my Moose at the end of
February--working with the folks at Aerotronics in Billings, Montana to do
it with me. I'll take pictures of everything and ask any questions that
you
can think of during the install. I'll post pictures to the list (well
some
anyway).

Hey Ron,

Where is the AHARS in the Dynon system? Is it an external box in the
tailcone, or is it integral to the display in the panel? I was debating
building a shelf in the back big enough to mount both a magnetometer and
an
AHARS.

Behind the baggage wall, up near the
ceiling is where I put my magnetometers
too. (Search http://n254mr.com for "magnetometer" for several pics)
As I
recall the mfgr. manual wanted 30" from any ferrous
material. I think that's
a little overkill, but where I put them was about as far
away from anything
ferrous as I could get them, and relatively easy to align
with the
centerline, etc. Research at the time raised concerns about
being near a
swarm of steel rivet mandrels in the area, but that has
proved to be not a
problem.

Wayne G. O'Shea

[rebel-builders] M-14 carb heat

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

I had a real good arguement with one of our main UTVA gang back when he
decided to make a 6 into 1 exhaust system for them and to get it in place he
had to scrap the rotary airbox on the UTVA (that allowed filtered air, ram
air and heated air).

Told him he was playing with fire (or lack there of) and got back "it's a
pressure carb..doesn't need carb heat".

I said so what, it's not fuel injected... it's still a venturi carb and it
will definitely ice under the right/wrong conditions.

He, with many thousands of hours more than me flying in all sorts of
situations, said it would never be a problem.

Fact of the matter... that puppy is still lying in pieces in a barn
somewhere after it.. COUGHED !

In Canada on an experimental/amateur built.. you'd never get a final
inspection passed without carb heat and in the case of a fuel injected
engine.. alternate air door.

;O)
