[rebel-builders] 4 door cowl

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi Charlie,
I'm building a 4 door right now as well. From all the stuff I read, it seems like people have mostly used .020 or .025 for the doors. I am using .025 6061 T6.

Hello All
I and starting to build the 4 door cowl for my Rebel. I have downloaded most
photos I could find and just read through about a hundred messages in the
archives looking for any help or tips. The one thing I could not find
mentioned was the preferred aluminum thickness and alloy type for the skin?
Would also appreciate any other thoughts and advice..

[rebel-builders] 4 door cowl

Post by Charlie Eubanks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Jesse, Joe & Ken

Thanks for the info and quick response on the 4 door cowl. Joe I do have M.
Hoffman photos and knew he used .020 skins but I didn't know if maybe it was
just his preference. I thought the cowl lacked enough structural support so
I was looking for confirmation. Ken; I did not know that MAM offered or much
less sold a 4 door cowl kit. When I bought my kit in 06 I asked about
available cowl and was offered only the speed cowl.

My plan now is to build the 4 door cowl using ACS fiberglass nose bowl MC-3A
(it also looks pretty light to me) and try to replicate what Wayne and
M.Hoffman and many of you have done. Again any tips thoughts would be
appreciated.

If you've got to buy material go with .025 Charlie... and it takes some work
drilling/niping forming but also rivet a .032 "shelf/lip" to the inside of
the rear lip on the fiberglass nose bowl for the doors to sit down onto and
the hinge channels to attach to. Makes for a MUCH cleaner cowling than
trying to get the doors to sit down flat on the nose bowl itself.
