Hi all

Can some one tell me how to install witches hat on the stainless firewall.

The holes that are drilled in firewall are to wide for the witches hat
without bending the hat.

I was told my murphy to bend witches hat to fit.

Thought i would see if anone else has had same problem before doing the work

Hi Mike !

Looks like my email is finally working again !!!

I didn't know the firewalls WERE pre-punched ! It is always
MUCH easier to install the witches hats to the firewall BEFORE installing
the firewall into the fuselage. They make it stiff & easy to position
properly.

You can just bend the witches hats to fit, BUT - be careful to
end up with the flanges of the hats PARALLEL to the firewall. If they
are not, they will make puckers in the firewall that can affect strength
and fit.... (this applies to ALL witches hats, everywhere !)

Some of the early kits had hats supplied that didn't have
flat flanges - these made puckers in the fuselage sides if used.
Fortunately, several builders noticed this and warned everybody to
double check that the hats sat flat.

They pre punch the firewall now COOL all I got in my kit was a flat sheet
of stainless with no instructions. I had to bend the witches hats to fit on
my float bulkheads. its no big deal.

FWIW, the original firewalls were aluminum and the Canadian inspection
program would not let this "fly", even though Transport Canada signed of all
the ones the factory built with aluminum firewalls. To be fair to the
factory, this is probably why it took so long for the firewall reinforcing
"need" to arise (in their eyes), as the .032 aluminum firewall (which was on
most of the "prototypes") is more resistant to buckling than the .022 or so
stainless one that is now supplied. EVERY stainless firewall I have looked
at on a flying Rebel has been buckled/pulled around the top motor mount area
(even on planes as low as 10 hours, one semi-hard landing is all it takes),
where as the aluminum firewalls aren't always deformed. You will find if you
have a stainless firewall that it is very easy to bend and form. If you pick
it up by one corner it will get bent out of shape really easy, and then is
easy to hand form back flat. Where if the aluminum one gets out of "shape"
it is almost impossible to get it flat again as it is not as malleable as
the stainless ones (The problem with aluminum is if you have an engine fire,
it will come in to find you a LOT quicker!).

The first "fix" was the factory sent out a flat stainless sheet to rivet
over the aluminum firewall for flame proofing, like Drew apparently has.
This also adds some strength to your firewall, especially when you add the
float fix or my reinforcing plates on top of that (as is the case with XWI
Bob) and makes it pretty much "bullet proof".

The next logical step was to just form the firewall from stainless (instead
of supplying an aluminum firewall plus the piece of stainless). About late
1994 early 1995 the firewalls started coming prepunched for the witches
hats. The stainless firewalls, like I said above due to their ease of
deformation, are much more susceptible to damage when the top mounts try to
pull together in a semi-hard to hard landing. It is essential that you
reinforce the top mount to mount area in one way or another, either with
MAM's float fix bulletin or using my (or making your own) reinforcing
plates.

The slickest way (I've seen) to install the witches hats, when working on
the bench (not an installed firewall), is to take a plank thick enough to
cut a "V" (with a table saw) deep enough (and snug enough) to hold the
witches hat. Then place the firewall over top to drill the holes.This way
the witches had isn't tipping back and forth while you try and drill. Also
give a wood backing, so the burr isn't as bad when the drill breaks through
the aluminum witches hat.

Hi Mike

Was your kit #7 predrilled for the witches hat? I am surprised. How many
holes are predrilled & what are the spacings verus the width of you stock
hat material?

Wayne,

How important are the gusset plates at the top of the front and rear door
post, on MAM float fix? The new manuals only show the 2" channel between the
engine mounts, but the SB show the channel "and" the gusset plates. Brian G.,
at MAM, told me only one Rebel on floats ever had a problem at the door post
and it was landing in to rough of water.
