There's tons of info in the archives on Subaru conversions.

The preferred choice now is the Legacy 2.5 litre, if you can
get one. This gives 165 HP. stock, out of the car. Go with the
Marcotte re-drive if you want a gear drive, or go with Dave Bangle's
SubieLyc drive if you like belts. Dave's setup allows you to mount
a Legacy directly onto Lycoming mounts, without changing anything !

This would leave you a clear path if you decided to change to
a Lycosaurus later ...

Typical Legacy installations run about 15 - 25 lb. heavier
than an O-320 - no big deal. Most Subaru converted Rebels I've flown
did NOT have the firewalls moved back ...

The Subarus I've flown are much smoother and quieter than
Lycomings, and burn ALMOST HALF the fuel !! Cruise speeds, climb,
and load carrying were all equivalent to Rebels with the same HP
Lycomings - and generally better, because several of the Sube's
had 165 or 185 horses !!
